This Sunday’s premiere will kick off the beginning of the final season of The Leftovers on HBO.

After much suspense, delay, and ado, the premiere weekend is finally upon us. The first of this season’s final eight episodes of The Leftovers will begin airing this Sunday on HBO at 9 p.m. EST.

In case you missed the trailer, the poster, or the hype in general, all signs point to another mind-blowing event this season.

SpoilerTV gives us a sneak peek into the premiere episode of The Leftovers, “The Book of Kevin”:

"Three years after Miracle, Texas was overrun by the Guilty Remnant, Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) has returned to his role as chief of police. Although he seems to have moved past the incredible events surrounding his “resurrection,” the Seventh Anniversary of the Sudden Departure is just two weeks away and many believe another apocalyptic event may come with it."

As mentioned before, I wouldn’t say any of this is groundbreaking news based on the trailer or the show’s promotion. It appears this season will pick up with Kevin trying desperately to return to his “normal” life as a police officer.

In this week’s episode, I’m hopeful we will get some insight into the events of the last three years. I definitely need to know what spurred the key characters moving to Australia. With the Guilty Remnant never far behind, their operation will soon become a global enterprise (expect a press conference from their CEO to discuss the expansion … oh wait, never mind … ).

Don’t assume the first episode will have a ton of action. It’s much more likely to set the stage for the rest of the season. Expect the suspense to gradually build to a palpable state as we near the anniversary of the Rapture and the end of an amazing show.

Next: The Leftovers: What’s next for the Garveys?

For those of you daring enough to read the critic reviews which may or may not contain spoilers (I wasn’t), here are links to Vanity Fair and Hollywood Reporter. I didn’t think it was possible, but my expectations continue to rise with each raving report.
