See the most popular driver in NASCAR explain why he is calling it a career in a live press conference Tuesday afternoon.

It seems like just yesterday that Dale Earnhardt Jr. was one of NASCAR’s young guns. But he’s now one of its elder statesman instead, which is why it was shocking but not surprising to find out he was retiring from stock car racing at the end of the 2017 season.

What we don’t know yet is why, but Earnhardt Jr. himself should be providing some clarity in that regard in a live press conference this afternoon. The press conference is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Eastern time and will feature both the driver and team owner Rick Hendrick.

Hendrick’s presence could mean that there will be an announcement made about the future of the No. 88 Chevrolet for 2018 and beyond. Earnhardt is only signed through this year, but he had been talking about an extension earlier in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series campaign.

It’s almost certain to be an emotional time for Earnhardt Jr., who accomplished a lot during his NASCAR career but was never able to secure that elusive Cup Series championship. Whoever replaces him will have gigantic shoes to fill, and more fans than ever are going to be pulling for Junior as he makes his final stops at various tracks for the remainder of 2017.
