Washington Nationals shortstop Trea Turner hit for the cycle during Tuesday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies.

Trea Turner could not be stopped at the plate Tuesday night, as he tormented the Rockies’ pitching staff all night and hit for the cycle. With only a triple needed to complete the cycle, he was able to hit one to right field at the top of the 7th inning.

The speedy shortstop put great contact on the ball, and promptly unloaded the bases as he raced to third and slide to make history. The cycle was the ninth in the Nationals-Expos franchise history, and the second cycle on the young season. Turner put up a monster stat line in the process of the cycle, as he scored four runs, and had a career-high seven RBIs for his team.

Turner was one of baseball’s top prospects before he was called up to the majors last season for good. He finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting behind the Los Angeles Dodgers’ shortstop Corey Seager. Turner put up a remarkable five category stat line of 53 runs, 13 home runs, 40 RBIs, 33 stolen bases and a .342 batting average in 73 games last season.

Turner strained his hamstring during the Nationals’ fifth game of the season, and he required a stint on the 10-day disabled list. Since he returned to the lineup on April 22, he has recorded at least one hit, and one scored run in each game. That is of course also including tonight’s record breaking performance. Turner projects to be a force in the major leagues for many years to come.
