In a surprise (not really) unveiling, Nintendo has just announced a new Nintendo 2DS XL. Think of it as something like a 3DS, minus the 3D.

Despite the extremely successful launch of the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo isn’t ready to give up on their handheld system, the DS. On Thursday, in an announcement that came from left field, Nintendo unveiled a new Nintendo 2DS XL system. In reality, the announcement is a bit surprising, but at the same time, it isn’t. Throughout the years, the company has released a variety of different variations of the same DS console. The 2DS XL is no different. However, it does look pretty cool.

At first glance, it doesn’t seem much different and in reality, it really isn’t. You can easily compare it to the 3DS XL, which was released back in 2015. It still has the flip feature, except the screen is much bigger, which is definitely more comfortable for gamers. If you do look closely, there are some differences. Other than the obvious one, which is that there’s no 3D functionality built in, it definitely stands out in some ways.

Before we get into that, check out the new trailer below:

For one, the system definitely looks a lot smoother on the edges. Nintendo calls this the ergonomic, folding design. Compared to the 3DS XL, it’s a lot more circular, rather than having sharp edges. The colors are also great. The default seems to be a black and light blue color, which is very pleasing to the eyes. Other than that, you can expect it to serve the same function(s) as the 3DS XL.

It’s still compatible with Amiibo’s, a c-stick is still included, and all the buttons are virtually identical. You’ll also be able to play the same games. We aren’t sure if it’s necessary, but those who don’t find the 3D function very appealing will definitely be considering this one.

The new Nintendo 2DS XL launches on July 28 at a retail price of $149.99.
