Manchester United will have Michael Carrick for the 2017-18 season after Carrick signed an extension.

Michael Carrick has signed a contract extension with Manchester United to keep him with the club until 2018. Carrick will be 36 when the extension runs out.

Michael Carrick has been with the Red Devils for over a decade, signing for the club in July of 2006. Carrick has had a massively successful 11 years in Manchester, winning the Premier League five times, two League Cups, an FA Cup, a FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Champions League, six community shields, and a Europa League title. Quite the trophy case.

During his 11 years with the club, Michael Carrick has mad 459 appearances. During those 459 appearances, he has scored 24 goals. Carrick was also named to the PFA Premier League Team of the Season during the 2012-13 season, as well as taking home the Players’ Player of the Season, voted on by his Manchester United teammates.

Carrick, obviously, seemed overjoyed to have signed another extension with the club,

"“What a fantastic way to finish off the season, with a new trophy in our cabinet. I am delighted that my journey with this great club is going to continue.“My focus now is looking ahead to my testimonial match next Sunday; it will be a very proud moment for me and my family, and is the perfect way to top what has already been a great season. I am thrilled that the fans will also get to see our shiny new Europa League trophy on the day.”"

The importance of the contract extension was also

not lost on Jose Mourinho

, who understands how pivotal Carrick is to bring the club back to their glory days.

"“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Michael over this past season. He is one of the true professionals of the game. Not only is he a great footballer, he is also a fantastic human being and a great role model to our younger members of the team. I am delighted he has extended his contract and I would like to take this opportunity to wish Michael all the best for his well-deserved testimonial match next Sunday.”"

Bringing the vice-captain back for another season will not only ensure that Manchester United has the necessary depth to compete in next year’s UEFA Champions League, but will offer a voice of experience to the youth and the inexperienced players in the squad.
