French Open 2017: Men’s results — Day 1

The first day of the French Open 2017 has concluded. Here’s a look at what happened on the men’s side of the bracket on Sunday May 28.

Sunday, May 28 marks the first day of the 2017 French Open. The action began at 5:00 a.m. ET, but the players were amped up for the tournament to start. Despite none of the major men’s stars playing on Sunday, those who did play had some impressive performances.

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez pulled off the first upset on the men’s side of the bracket, beating #26 Gilles Muller 7-6(4), 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-2.  The Spaniard has never won a major but has six singles titles in his career. Garcia-Lopez will face the winner of the first round battle between Marco Trungelliti and Quentin Halys.

Number 19-ranked Albert Ramos-Vinolas got a scare from Marius Copil, but managed to overcome losing the first set to win the next three, 6-7(7), 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. He awaits the winner between Benjamin Bonzi and Daniil Medvedev. Number 20-ranked Pablo Carreno Busta beat Florian Mayer 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. Grigor Dimitrov defeated Stephane Robert in three sets 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.

Stefanos Tsitsipas nearly pulled off an upset over 23-ranked Ivo Karlovic, but lost 7-6(5), 7-5, 6-4. The best match of the day featured a five set showdown between Lucas Pouille and Julien Benneteau, with the former coming out on top.

Next: Best players to never win French Open

Johnson and Sugita will continue their match on Monday. Most of the big draws on the men’s side didn’t play on Sunday, but there were still some excellent matches. The huge names will be playing on Monday May 29. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are among the players who will be having their first round matches on Monday. Without Roger Federer, the men’s bracket has become more wide open.
