Pekka Rinne stepped up big in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final, and the call of  the game’s turning point from his home country was fantastic.

After struggling in the first two games of the Stanley Cup Final, and speculation he would be benched, Predators’ goaltender Pekka Rinne has turned things around with the series moving to Nashville. As the Predators have evened the series with two decisive wins on the scoreboard, Rinne has turned aside 50 of 52 shots for a .962 save percentage.

The Predators let Monday night’s Game 4 2-1 in the second period, but the Pittsburgh Penguins were threatening to score fairly consistently as Rinne stymied them. During a particular sequence, Rinne really stood on his head to prevent the score from being tied. Some good fortune was required, but that should not dismiss Rinne’s athletic display between the pipes.

It was clearly the game’s turning point, as the Predators soon scored to make it 3-1 on their way to a 4-1 victory. If “Doc” Emmerich’s play-by-play call on NBC wasn’t great enough, the call of the sequence from Rinne’s home country was at least equally good.

The enthusiasm for the moment is clearly not lost in translation, even if there’s no immediate way to know what was said besides “Pekka Rinne!” Rinne even lost his stick in the middle of the sequence, before making the final sprawling save to put the threat to an end.

Rinne has been generally better at home, as could be expected, and notably bad in his career against the Penguins prior to the last two games. The Predators go as he goes right now, and the key is carrying the momentum from the last two games back to Pittsburgh for Thursday night’s Game 5.

Rinne turned the momentum of Game 4 with a great sequence and multiple other great saves. Game 5 will surely stand as the turning point for the Stanley Cup Final as a whole.
