West Virginia got some really good news on Tuesday, as quarterback Will Grier will be eligible for the opener.

The West Virginia Mountaineers have a tough test coming up to open the college football season in the form of the defending ACC Coastal Division champion Virginia Tech Hokies. To make matters a tad more stressful, there was a possibility they’d have to go into that game without starting quarterback Will Grier, who transferred from the Florida Gators.

Well, worrying about Grier not being on the field against the Hokies is no more. On Tuesday, West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen announced that Grier has been ruled eligible for the game and it’s assumed that he’ll be taking the snaps on September 3 when the two teams meet one another.

Grier made his presence felt in the college football world back in 2015 for Florida, when he got off to a hot start for the Gators and Jim McElwain. Through six games, Grier tossed for 1,202 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions as a freshman as he and Florida did not suffer a defeat.

However, things came to a screeching halt when Grier was suspended for a PED violation. Per the rules, he would need to sit out the first seven games of the season upon his return, but since he sat out the entire season last year, Holgorsen and West Virginia sought a waiver to have him become eligible immediately, a waiver that ultimately ended up being granted.

Given what he showed throwing the ball in 2015 when he was on the field for the Gators, Grier should be a perfect fit in Holgorsen’s Air Raid offense. Should everything work out as planned for the transfer signal-caller, the Mountaineers could be serious contenders in the Big 12 this coming season.

We’ll see right off the bat, though, whether or not that success can come to fruition with Grier taking the field on September 3 against Virginia Tech.
