Mets promote Tim Tebow to High-A affiliate St. Lucie

Tim Tebow is moving up to High-A baseball after the New York Mets gave him a promotion.

In case you forgot, former Heisman Trophy winner, college football legend and former NFL first round pick turned NFL sideshow, Tim Tebow is playing minor league baseball. It’s easy to forget about him as he toiled away in anonymity for Low-A Columbia where he hit a robust .222 with a .340 slugging percentage that makes punch and Judy hitters look like they’re Barry Bonds on the juice.

Despite Tebow’s struggles at the plate, he’s an attraction in the Mets organization and that likely played a large part in their decision to promote him to High-A ball. The move to promote Tebow to Class A St. Lucie was first reported by Anthony DiComo.

Sunday’s game will be his final one with the Columbia Fireflies where he’s hit three home runs, scored 29 runs and driven in 23 runs this year.

With his promotion to the St. Lucie Mets, it stands to reason that there will be a big promotion awaiting his arrival. The Jacksonville native who starred at the University of Florida is going to be an attraction and help sell some tickets. With kids off for summer vacation and many families using the summer to travel, maybe there will be a host of people heading out to see some High-A baseball and the chance to see Tebow get some hits. Or at the least, meet and greet some fans in the stands with some world-class hospitality.

Tebow likely will never receive another promotion beyond this level. Let’s be real, this promotion isn’t merit-based, but I’d also love to hear the Mets brass say this move was motivated by ticket and promotional reasons. Not that it matters, but it’s cool to see Tebow do this when it’s co clear that he won’t have a future in baseball, although his perseverance is something worth celebrating.
