Five wrestlers who make sense as challengers for Brock Lesnar’s Universal Title at WWE SummerSlam

WWE Great Balls of Fire is in the books and, as expected, Brock Lesnar is still the reigning, defending, undisputed, WWE Universal champion.

Great Balls of Fire is the last stop for Raw on the way to SummerSlam, which means we can start looking at potential matches for Lesnar and his Universal title. Given that Lesnar isn’t a traditional champion, in that he never wrestles on TV and only appears three weeks prior to the pay-per-view, you know WWE isn’t going to waste a Brock Lesnar match at SummerSlam on just anybody.

To face Lesnar at the second biggest event of the year, there has to be something special about you. Maybe that means bringing back someone for a one-off or using someone from SmackDown. Or, it could mean punishing everyone on the Raw roster in order to heat up the guy they want to sacrifice to Lesnar.

Whoever they chose as Lesnar’s SummerSlam opponent, we can all trust that they put a lot of thought into things and didn’t just pick someone for the sake of picking them. Right? Right.

Here are the top five choices to face Brock Lesnar in Brooklyn at this year’s SummerSlam.

Roman Reigns

Based on the latest reports, this appears to be the plan. They were building toward Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar for WrestleMania 34, but decided to hotshot things because “plans change.”

Roman may have lost the Ambulance Match to Braun Strowman at Great Balls of Fire, but anyone who watched the show saw Reigns walk away on his own two feet while Braun was a bloody mess who could barely stand. So who really won the match? Obviously the guy who didn’t need to be cut out of an ambulance with the jaws of life.

A few weeks ago, Roman declared that he was the number one contender for the Universal title because this is his yard. Samoa Joe took exception to this, but with Joe just losing and Braun now out of the picture, it appears that there’s no one standing in the way of Roman and his question to capture his first ever Universal title. Unless they decide that it’s time for Bray Wyatt to make idle threats again.

Roman vs. Brock is a feud that never got settled a few years ago. The logical “full circle” booking is that they hold off until WrestleMania, but WWE hasn’t exactly shown the ability to book for the longterm or be logical.

I’m sure the Brooklyn crowd will give Reigns a warm reception as they attempt to crown him “The Guy” once again.
