Arsene Wenger is confident Alexis Sanchez will return but Sanchez says he wants to play in the Champions League.

Less than 24 hours after Arsene Wenger stated he was “positive” Alexis Sanchez would be returning to Arsenal, there is a new twist in the Sanchez saga.

“I want to play in the Champions League. The decision isn’t down to me, I need to wait for Arsenal,” Sanchez told Radio Sport Chile.

The confidence Wenger had less than a day ago is now looking less certain. Sanchez stating he wants to play in the Champions League might take the decision out of the hands of Wenger and Arsenal.

Arsenal, despite stellar play from Sanchez last season, finished 5th in the Premier League, meaning they will be playing in the Europa League next season. It is because of this finish they are missing out on the Champions League, and now Sanchez is looking for a move elsewhere.

Sanchez has been linked with both big clubs in Manchester, United and City. And with both of those clubs playing in the Champions League, they could be likely destinations for the Chilean attacker.

Both Manchester United and Manchester City have built a reputation for splashing the cash on attacking-minded players like Sanchez. And with Sanchez also looking to hold out for a new contract worth £400,000 per week, this is yet another reason that Arsenal might not have the choice to keep their star player.

Both City and United are more than willing to spend the money on the transfer and the wages for a player of his caliber. The question is, will Wenger and Co. be able to convince him to stay?
