After making it clear that he wants to play Champions League football, Alexis Sanchez is reportedly heading to PSG on a four-year deal.

After losing the Ligue 1 title to Monaco and crashing out of the Champions League in embarrassing fashion, PSG have been serious players in the transfer market. They’ve already bought Dani Alves, and have been heavily linked to Barcelona superstar Neymar recently. However, in a shock move, they’ve swooped in and taken Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal, as La Parisien has reported the two sides have agreed to a four-year deal worth €40 million.

Neymar is the player they’ve had their sights on for a while now. But whereas the Barcelona man has an exit clause worth €222 million, Sanchez is much more affordable and eager to leave Arsenal. He has stated on multiple occasions that he wants to play in the Champions League this season, and that he won’t renew his contract when it’s up this year. This year was the first time Arsenal missed the Champions League since 1996, and the club don’t want to lose him on a free transfer.

Ever since Sanchez joined Arsenal, he’s often been counted on to single-handedly win his team games. And even with his individual brilliance, the best they could hope for every season was a top four finish and an appearance in the Champions League Round of 16.

Last year, however, they lost 10-2 on aggregate to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, and finished outside of the top four. To make matters worse, they brought back Arsene Wenger when everyone associated with the club wanted him gone. It’s not hard to see why Sanchez would’ve been frustrated.

While most people knew that Sanchez was as good as gone, Manchester City was the team he was linked to the most. However, the worst thing Arsenal could’ve done was sell him to a Premier League rival. So instead, they sold him to the team that’s confident they can do a double swoop. But even if they don’t get Neymar, Sanchez is an excellent consolation prize.
