Jordan Reed injury: Redskins unsure of timetable

Washington Redskins tight end Jordan Reed could be missing more time than expected with a toe injury.

There is some troubling news coming out of Washington Redskins camp today.

As the Redskins prepare for the start of the season, they could be without Jordan Reed.

The tight end went to see a specialist in Charlotte regarding his injured toe. Head coach Jay Gruden said there is no timetable for his return.

Reed was placed on the PUP list to start training camp and the injury wasn’t expected to be serious. Now it looks like he will miss a considerable amount of time.

Toe injuries can prove to be tricky. Even something as minor as a sprain can affect the way a player runs on the field. It’s something that Reed and the Redskins don’t seem to be taking lightly.

When on the field, Reed has been spectacular. He posted a career season in 2015 with 952 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. The same production continued into last season before he missed time with a sprained shoulder. He’s by far been one of Kirk Cousin’s favorite targets and at 6-2, 246, he is a huge target in the red zone and matchup nightmare.

But as much promise as Reed as shown over the past few seasons, injuries have limited his time on the field. He has yet to play a full 16-game season and has missed 18 games total over four seasons. Concussions have been the main root of the injury problems, which is concerning within itself.

The Redskins signed Reed to a $50 million extension last offseason and things look cloudy for now. With a potential out in his contract after this season, the Redskins could choose to take that route. It’s a tough move to make for a very talented player, but with Kirk Cousins looking to get paid this offseason, decisions need to be made.

For now, the Redskins priority will be getting Reed healthy and ready for the start of the regular season.
