WKU dares Kentucky basketball to schedule game with proceeds going to charity
Western Kentucky wasn’t happy with the Kentucky Wildcats schedule reveal.
In what seemed like an ordinary schedule announcement, Kentucky Basketball revealed a pair of Conference-USA teams added to their slate for the upcoming season, UAB and Marshall. Perhaps what could have been the easiest C-USA team to host, Western Kentucky, was noticeably absent on the list. WKU responded in the perfect way.
Not only did WKU offer to play Kentucky, but also suggested they give the entire guarantee check to a charity within the state.
Distance-wise, the two are just a couple hours apart, which seems like a smart journey considering air travel restrictions that may be imposed by COVID-19 well into the winter sports season. Money going to a good cause on top of that, what’s not to like?
Why would the Wildcats refuse Western Kentucky’s offer for a game this season?
If you really think about it, the offer works both ways too. Kentucky picks up what should be a relatively easy non-conference victory, while WKU faces a top-tier opponent to bring some buzz to the basketball program. WKU’s history is no joke either, as the team recently held the 17th most victories in NCAA history along with a top-ten winning percentage.
A matchup between the two is also a few years overdue, as the last came in 2012 with an 81-66 win for the Wildcats in an NCAA Tournament run that culminated in a national championship. That’s not necessarily the fairest of comparisons, a matchup today may be a bit more interesting.
Regardless, nothing beats a charity offer and Kentucky has no reason to turn it down. Your move, Kentucky. Perhaps John Calipari should take a break from his latest recruiting phonecall to take the Hilltoppers up on this offer.
