Dak Prescott tried to get a deal done with the Dallas Cowboys, but unfortunately it was too late for both sides to come to an agreement.

According to Jane Slater, Dak Prescott tried his darnedest to get something worked out with the Dallas Cowboys prior to the deadline.

However, it didn’t work out and now the Cowboys will have a frustrated quarterback playing on the franchise tag this year. Not the best situation to be in, especially considering these contract talks have been going on between the two sides since last summer.

Per Slater’s tweet, the deal would have been for roughly $33-35 million a year and $110 million guaranteed along with a $50 million signing bonus and $70 million in the first two years. It’s a great contract, but the deadline of 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday had come and gone.

Dak Prescott will play on the franchise tag, which is worth $31.4 million in 2020.

Yesterday, NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported these numbers as being the Cowboys’ final offer and the news came a few days after Patrick Mahomes had signed his mega-extension worth over $450 million over the next 10 years.

Prescott isn’t Mahomes. These numbers would be very good for a player of his caliber. The fact it took so long for the Cowboys to make the correct offer speaks volumes about what is going on in JerryWorld.

Maybe it won’t end up backfiring. Maybe this will be motivation for Prescott to play lights-out football and get even more money on the market next year, potentially with a team who is willing to pay him more than Dallas would.

For the Cowboys, this is a bad look. If you’re going to offer a 26-year-old quarterback $110 million in guarantees, you clearly want the player. Get the deal one and move on with the season. Incredibly, they didn’t.
