The Patriots are bringing Matt Patricia back to where it all began.

Patricia has signed on to join the Patriots coaching staff as a talent evaluator of sorts, his first gig since being fired by the Detroit Lions after a miserable stint as head coach. Patricia is a classic example of a Bill Belichick disciple being given too much power, and too much responsibility. For now, he must remain close to the coaching tree, in similar fashion to former Broncos head coach and now-Pats offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Heading back to New England was a predictable decision from Patricia. It’s what he knows best, and if he can rebuild his reputation from the ground up there, perhaps he can receive another opportunity somewhere down the line.

NFL Twitter had plenty of fun at Patricia’s expense

While the decision makes sense from Patricia’s point of view, the overwhelming majority of football fans couldn’t help but laugh at yet another member of the Belichick coaching tree essentially admitting failure.

In the end, Patricia likely could’ve signed on just about anywhere with an opening given his experience, but New England offers him the chance to be used to the best of his abilities. Patricia can repair his reputation in terms of player development and relationships, as several former Lions players have flat-out stated that he did not appreciate the talent they brought to the table.
