Part competition, part spectacle, part popularity contest, the dunk competition is one of the premiere exhibitions in all of sports. Despite the contest taking a hit in recent years, it remains a must watch every All-Star weekend.

While we’ll never forget the legends of the past who have sat atop the Mount Rushmore of dunks, those who didn’t hoist the trophy provided some equally memorable moments.

Here are the 10 best dunkers to never win the NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

10. Darrell Griffith – Dr. Dunkenstein was a semi-finalist in the NBA’s inaugural dunk contest in 1984 and was eliminated in the first round of the ‘85 competition. He remains one of the most slept on dunkers of all-time and boasts of an eye popping 48-inch vertical.

(Griffith does his thing at the 2:05 mark)

9. Kenny Smith – What he lacked in hops, The Jet made up for with creativity. His iconic between the legs, off the backboard dunk is his calling card and was good enough to earn Kenny a second place finish to Dominique Wilkins in 1990 and a birth in the semi-finals of the ’91 competition.

8. Andre Iguodala – The only one-time entrant who makes the list. Iguodala’s unbelievable behind the backboard dunk rivals some of the best dunks in the history of the competition.

7. Rex Chapman – Forget about Woody Harrelson’s inability. Rex Chapman can jump! The closest Rex ever got to the crown was a semi-final finish in the 1991 contest but his creativity and sick boosties make him one of the best to never hoist the trophy at All-Star weekend.

This is the moment we have been waiting for. The Super Bowl is to degenerate gamblers what the MTV Video Music Awards is to pedophiles. That one day of the year when your sickness is masked by the glitz and glamour of an overblown spectacle.

After chasing our losses over the past five months, we’ve finally reached the summit.

To the layman, prop bets are the stuff that losers blow their money on. To the degenerate, prop bets are the stuff that losers blow their money on.

I’m not saying degenerates are losers in the John Edwards kind of way. No, we are losers in the red ink kind of way. Our bank accounts are drained. Our relationships are strained. Our livers are pained.

Now is when we go for broke, chasing bad bet after bad bet with the hopes of Lady Luck blowing us one last kiss before March Madness invades the sportsbook.

Best of luck my friends! May your parlays pay and may your wife stay another day.

How Long will it Take Carrie Underwood to Sing the National Anthem – Under 1 min 43 seconds (-160): How can you spot the degenerate gambler at your Super Bowl party? He’s the one with a hand over a stopwatch instead of his heart.

Which Sideline Reporter will be On TV First after the Opening Kick? – Solomon Wilcots (-115): If Steve Tasker pops up first you’ll have an early excuse to take a shot. Just tell your friends it’s a drinking game. If they want to join in, all they’ve got to do is lend you 500 bucks.

Super Bowl XLIV Coin Toss – Tails (-105): They say tails never fails. I say heads leaves you dead. Ah yes, the game hasn’t even started and you’re already chasing your losses. Not to worry, still plenty of prop bets left to get that metallic taste of coin-toss-roulette out of your mouth.

Let me paint a picture for you.

Imagine if you will that Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida, is really a saloon.

It is a slow, humid Sunday afternoon and the saloon is filled with vivacious patrons. The room is abuzz as libations flow free and joyous music reverberates off the walls.

Suddenly there is a loud CRASH heard. The music comes to a screeching halt as the room turns in nervous anticipation to see Peyton Manning standing in the doorway. He has kicked the saloon’s swinging doors off their hinges.

In a slow Southern Drawl, Manning says, “I’m lookin’ fer Drew Brees, anybody seen ‘em?”

A mysterious voice bellows from the rear of the room. “Who’s askin’?”

The saloon turns to see Drew Brees seated at a card table. He stands, revealing a pair of six shooters attached to either leg. Manning flashes a wry grin. “I’m askin’”, Peyton says while revealing the guns strapped to the both of his legs.

Without saying another word, Manning turns and exits the saloon. Brees follows amid nervous moans and groans from the patrons. The crowd knows what is coming next. There is but one way that feuds of this sort end. Two men exit the saloon. Only one will return with a Lombardi Trophy in hand.

Unless Sergio Leone was scripting games for the NFL, then this is not exactly how Super Bowl XLIV will play out on Sunday. None the less, the highly anticipated duel between Manning and Brees is certainly one of the most drama filled storylines of the big game.

Over the years, we’ve seen some epic battles waged between rival signal callers with the greatest prize in football at stake. Let’s relive the best quarterback duels in Super Bowl history as we countdown the hours until kickoff.

Cue the theme from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Watching the Super Bowl just for the sake of seeing the newest ads has become an openly accepted practice. What was once a ploy used to get more eyes on America’s biggest sporting event is now a multi-million dollar industry whose sheer intrigue rivals that of the big game itself.

From Peyton Manning’s pursuit of the title of greatest quarterback ever to the city of New Orleans rising from the ashes on the backs of their Saints, Super Bowl XLIV has more plot lines than a daytime soap. Still, the biggest talking points leading up to Super Sunday revolves around an ad featuring a kid who has yet to play in the NFL and his mom’s life altering decision.

After the game is played there will be the obligatory discussions of which ads were the best and which were the worst. Every year there are also the handful which will never see the light of day again, forever locked away in a vault with the Zapruder film and copies of Ishtar on betamax.

Some, like this PETA ad which didn’t make the cut for Super Bowl XLIII, won’t even make it to broadcast. Thanks to the modern miracle of the internet, nothing remains hidden for long, allowing us to see ads which have been deemed unfit for public consumption.

Here are five ads that you won’t be seeing this Sunday.

After seeing how his favorite sporting event was being bastardized, an enraged Peter Griffin sought our help to reach NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Since Mr. Goodell is a regular reader of the FanSided Sports Blog, Peter thought this would be the ideal way to get his suggestions on how to fix the Pro Bowl to the commish.

Here is what he has to say:

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury.

I, Peter Griffin, being of sound mind, body and John Malkovich do hereby declare that I’m friggin’ pissed!

I mean, c’mon Goodell. How can you destroy the best event in the sports like this? You can’t imagine my shock when I found out that you decided to have the Pro Bowl upstaged by the Super Bowl. It was worse than the time when I learned why all the dinosaurs died. We all know that the Pro Bowl is the most important football game on the planet. Why else would it be played after the Super Bowl for all these years?

So before you do any further damage to the game, Goodell, I’d advise you to take into considering my 10 suggestions to fix the best sports event in the universe.

1. Players should be required to play the game in giant robo-suits like the ones in that Anne-Marie Johnson movie Robot Jox.

2. The opening coin toss should be replaced by a game of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots.

3. From this day forward, Brett Favre should be the full-time quarterback for both the AFC and NFC in perpetuity or until time the end of time. Whichever comes first.

4. Patrick Stewart, Joey Adams and Tone Loc should be the game announcers.

5. John Madden will also be in the booth, but only to make those “Boom” sound effects whenever a freakin’ sweet hit occurs.

With the NBA season at its midpoint, let’s takes a look at some of the lesser achievements reached through the first half of the season.

The Sasha Vujacic Award for most Annoying Foreign Born Player

Omri Casspi

Casspi keeps the Sacramento tradition alive as he walks the path plowed by Peja Stojakovic and Hedo Turkoglu before him.

The Steve Francis Award for Falling off the NBA Radar

Tracy McGrady

So much for T-Mac and Yao being the new millennium Shaq and Kobe. More like the modern day Dwight Howard and Vince Carter. What? Too soon?

Shaking hands with his opponent after a defeat doesn’t make much sense to LeBron James and neither does keeping his word.

After “preliminary” putting his name into the hat for the 2010 dunk competition, the self proclaimed King has reversed court and withdrawn. The NBA’s announcement of the participants that will entertain the crowd in Dallas on February 13th is minus the man who has delusions of MJ grandeur.

What exactly is LeBron so scurred of?

It’s not like he has to worry about taking an L in the contest. By simply showing up for the event he’s guaranteed a win. Do you honestly think that those figure head judges will be allowed to give the W to someone not named LeBron? Not on David Stern’s watch they won’t.

Plus, LeBron doesn’t need to get all crazy creative and try to reinvent the dunk. His sick hops and cheetah speed are his best weapons. No need to try and catch oops off the shot clock while doing a 360 windmill leaping over one of his dancing teammates. Just use what the big man up stairs blessed you with to thrown one down from the free throw line on a twelve foot rim. Do something nobody else on this planet is capable of doing. Is that too much to ask of the man who requested everyone stop wearing #23 in honor of Jordan?

Here’s a suggestion: How about LeBron honoring Jordan by doing the 2010 version of all of MJ’s iconic dunks?

Now at days, it has become increasingly difficult to trust football coaches. They speak in such coded language, ever careful not to incriminate themselves, that one can hardly recognize their language as Standard English.

When Nick Saban said he was not going to be the coach at Alabama, we assumed he was going to remain the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Well, the joke was on all of us who had such a terrible understanding of Sabanese. As we came to learn, what he meant was “there is a 100% chance I’ll be the coach at Alabama and we’re going to win a BCS Championship and we’ll have the program’s first ever Heisman winner.”

Sorry, Nick. That was our bad for not taking the time to learn your language.

Now we’ve got a brand new dialect known as Kiffinese. At first, we all assumed that Lane Kiffin was speaking out of both sides of his mouth like Harvey Dent. As it turns out, we’re all behind the learning curve on this new and emerging language.

As a fan of both USC football and the Oakland Raiders, I’ve gained a lot of experience in Kiffin’s linguistics. Allow me to translate some of Kiffin’s quotes from his introductory press conference at USC.

First we’ll begin with the basics so you can learn how to interpret Kiffinese. Here are a few key terms that you should acquaint yourself with.

Clean Program: A program built on lies and underhanded tactics. This is the Kiffin credo and can be interpreted as “by any means necessary”.

Our: In Kiffinese, this term usually refers to Lane’s ego, his trophy wife or his checkbook.

Recruit: A recruit is a disposable item that can be used to help better a football program or can simply be a tool used to improve a coach’s resume.

Respect: Disdain or loathing

Rules: Road blocks or obstacles

Us: Different than our, us refers Kiffin’s goon squad that does all the dirty work in the background.

Now let’s see Kiffinese in action.

He was once the face of a renewed love for our national pastime.

Now, Mark McGwire represents the two-faced nature of our country.

The financial district has Bernie Madoff. The political sector had Richard Nixon. With his overdue admission of steroid use, the sports world now has Mark McGwire.

All of the aforementioned liars are connected by a common thread: They have all disgraced their country after being propped up as pillars of society.

If Mark McGwire is as American as apple pie, then Aunt Bee must have been cooking up meth instead of granny smith apples.

Not that McGwire’s tear filled admission comes as a surprise to most of us. We all had our suspicions. All you had to do was check out the photo on his ’87 Topps rookie card then flip on SportsCenter during the summer of ’98 to see a noticeable difference in appearance.

The Southern Cali Kid entered the game as a slugger. 49 dingers in his first full season in the majors will attest to that. During the late 80’s and early 90’s, McGwire and his fellow Bash Brother Jose Canseco formed one of the most feared duos in baseball history. However, it was only a matter of time until that ugly American trait known as greed set in.

No need to dig through his trash or to stalk observe McGwire like Selena Roberts did A-Rod. Simply look at his numbers and you’ll see the lie materialize before your eyes.

Injuries, a dip in production and the secret drug culture of Major League Baseball got the best of Big Mac.

On the surface, ESPN’s plans to launch a 3D network might seem like a good idea. That is until you consider some of the athletes who could be invading your living room.

Fortunately for us, Sam Cassell is retired. Unfortunately for us, there are still plenty of athletes out there who make Medusa cringe. While I’m sure the viewing experience will be great, this idea just feels like it is a bridge too far into the invasion of my personal space.

Here are 5 athletes I hope to never see in 3D.

Clay Guida

You remember the scene in The Ring when the creepy chick claws her way out of the TV? Now imagine that same scene playing out with a bloodied Guida crawling out of the octagon and onto your couch.

Zaza Pachulia

With the advent of HD came the realization that Zaza has the worst bacne in sports. With the advent of 3D will come the realization that magnified pimple pus doesn’t make for a pleasant viewing experience.

Let me get this straight: Manny Pacquiao fears no man in the ring but is deathly afraid of…needles?

That would appear to be the case as the biggest fight in boxing could to be off due to “harassment”.

A report in the Grand Rapids Press quotes promoter Bob Arum.

“We appeased Mayweather by agreeing to a urine analysis at any time, and blood testing before the press conference and after the fight. Mayweather pressed for blood testing even up to the weigh-in. He knew that Manny gets freaked out when his blood gets taken, and feels that it weakens him. This is just harassment and, to me, just signaled that he didn’t want the fight.”

Floyd Mayweather’s insistence on random, Olympic-style, blood testing has so offended the Filipino Lord of the Ring that he’s now backing out of the biggest fight of the millennium, thus leaving millions on the table.

Arum goes on to call out Money May.

“Floyd, to me, is a coward and he’s always been a coward,” Arum said. “Not a physical coward, but a coward because he’s afraid to face somebody who could beat him. And believe me, Manny Pacquiao could beat him. So he’ll go his way, we’ll go our way, and that’ll be fine.”

With the college bowl season upon us and the decade drawing to a close, it’s time to look back at the best postseason clashes in college football.

Certainly the current system is flawed. Having a national champion decided by computers and biased voters makes as much sense as having Stevie Wonder judge a beauty pageant.

Despite the hypocrisy of the BCS, the bowl system consistently gives us matchups between teams we’d normally never see on the same field together. Pitting schools against one another with unique styles of play helps to create some of the best unscripted entertainment in the world.

Here are the 10 best bowl games of this decade thus far.

Anybody who has played sports of any kind or has ever worked at the DMV knows that sometimes four letter words are the only way to express how one feels.

It wasn’t so long ago that the only time you’d hear an athlete using some blue language during a game was on bleeped out blooper reels. Unless you had floor seats close enough to hear all the action, you’d just have to guess what was being said during those moments of frustration.

Thanks to technological innovation and round-the-clock media coverage we get to hear and see everything live.

Even with the 5-second Janet Jackson ashy nipple delay instituted, things still leak out to a voyeuristic public thanks to the internet.

Despite our ever dwindling list of social taboos, nothing gets our attention like a good F-Bomb dropped in the midst of a live interview. Getting a glimpse of Britney’s yeasty Federline cave is hardly shocking but hearing a coach using an off-color term for Oedipus certainly raises a few eyebrows.

Sometimes no other words will suffice.

Sometimes our emotions get the best of us.

Sometimes those moments we assume are private aren’t really.

Here are a few of those moments.

Kentucky freshman John Wall had a Garden Party. I’d call it a coming out party but it’s a little late in the game for that. The top recruit in the nation was already setting the NCAA on fire before Dick Vitale was screaming his name in New York City last night.

If his game winning shot in his collegiate debut didn’t put Wall on your radar. Then you can now consider yourself aware after his performance at Madison Square Garden.

Already viewed as the top pick in the 2010 NBA draft when if he decides comes out, Wall led the Wildcats to a 64-61 victory over Connecticut. The Raleigh native dropped 25 in the bucket, picked the Huskies’ pockets 6 times and for good measure scored an And 1 to win the game while pouring in 12 of his team’s final 15 points.

Don’t look now but Los Angeles is becoming a serious contender for America’s official Fight Town.

Nothing can compare to the spectacle of the Las Vegas strip on a fight night and L.A. will have to attract better judges than the three blind mice who scored the Lyoto Machida-Shogun Rua fight at Staples.

Make no mistake though. L.A. is a fight town on the rise and Vegas has some serious competition on its hands.

Having hosted a multitude of boxing, UFC and WWE events in recent years, Staples Center is now stepping up to bid for what could be the biggest sporting event of 2010.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Staples Center ownership group AEG has offered $20-million to host the Manny Pacquaio-Floyd Mayweather Jr. mega fight. How serious is the offer? Apparently it is serious enough for Mayweather’s promoter to cancel a trip to visit the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

Staples Center has hosted everything from Michael Jackson’s funeral to the NBA Finals. However, the largest crowd to ever file into the Downtown L.A. arena was a crowd of 20,800 who watched Shane Mosley knock the plaster of Paris out of Antonio Margarito back in January.

Chances are we’ll never know exactly what happened in those early morning hours when Tiger Woods parked his SUV under a tree. That is for Harvey Levin and his Time Warner slush fund to get to the bottom of. The rest of us are just groping in the dark as we piece together our theories rooted more in ignorance than fact.

For whatever reason, it has already become acceptable to turn domestic violence into public spectacle for our amusement. We truly have no idea if Elin Nordegren angrily pursued her husband with a three-iron in hand but that didn’t stop the Jacksonville Jaguars from making a mockery of the situation. I realize times are tough in J-Ville but is this really the best way to drum up ticket sales?

Since when did it become acceptable to make fun of household abuse?

SNL didn’t waste any time in piling on either. The better half of Good Burger and Blake Lively played an abused Woods and an aggressive Nordegren respectively as the studio audience laughed in unison. Oh, did I mention that Rihanna was the musical guest that night?

Define ignorant irony: Comedic skit pokes fun at domestic violence on the same night when a domestic violence victim headlines.

You stay classy, Lorne Michaels.

Someone please explain to me how this is funny?

If the situation was reversed and it was Nordegren who was found unconscious on her neighbor’s front lawn with a bloody lip, we’d be horrified. Tiger’s “transgressions” would be unforgivable and he’d forever be known as a wife beater. Never mind his penchant for chasing trim around the globe.

Soccer/Football/Futbol is truly the world’s game. Thus the biggest sporting event on the planet is the World Cup.

There is not another sport that unites as many nationalities on the field of play as soccer does. Just to prove how small this world truly is, I offer you the most popular figure in football as a common link to all the World Cup Nations.

For this exercise, we’ll link a member of every national team that has qualified for the big tournament in South Africa with David Beckham in six degrees or less.

Algeria

Nadir Belhadj plays for Portsmouth with David James who played with David Beckham as a member of the English national team.

Argentina

Carlos Tevez plays for Manchester City with Robinho who played with Beckham at Real Madrid.

Australia

Mark Schwarzer plays for Fulham with Clint Dempsey who plays with Landon Donovan on the U.S. national team who plays with Beckham as member of the L.A. Galaxy.

Charlie Weis isn’t walking through that door folks.

Chances are he’s taking Jimmy Clausen with him.

After crapping the BCS money bed one too many times, Jack Swarbrick decided that buying out the most ludicrous contract in football now was more financially feasible than honoring it later.

Now that the biggest scapegoat in sports has been canned, the mission to fill the void left by his oversized ego has begun.

Does it really matter who inherits the remains of an ancient football tradition?

Is there any human being on the planet capable of resurrecting ghosts of the past to play football on national TV in the fall?

Notre Dame fans are waiting on Touchdown Jesus to save them when not even he could lift their team from the grave. The time has come for the Fighting Irish faithful to come to Jesus and accept the lot of their football lives.

This in an above average program that has underachieved for nearly two decades.

When it comes to films about the holiday of Thanksgiving, there is really only one that even enters the discussion for the title of greatest.

Sure, you can debate the Christmas offerings with such classic titles as Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story and Die Hard to name a few.

When it comes to Turkey Day, John Hughes is king. Planes, Trains and Automobiles is the gold standard for Thanksgiving flicks, in fact, it is in the discussion for greatest movie ever made.

Steve Martin and John Candy are comedic genius in this 80’s classic. We’re talking certified Einsteins of comedy in that George Carlin/Richard Pryor kind of way. Not the fucktarded humor of Dane Cook that all the kids seem to respond to these days. Plus, both funnymen show a real grasp of the characters and can even flip the script in some very dramatic scenes.

This film truly embodies everything that the holiday is supposed to be. While the entire movie is a must watch for every Thanksgiving, here are 10 of the best scenes from this all-time classic.

(Irrational advice for the gambler trying to win big just to break even for the week. This week we’re offering up a Joe Six Pack of picks inspired by the rogue maverick herself.)

College Football

Arizona State (+4) vs. UCLA

By all indications, this is a classic flip the coin and let it ride bet. What’s more maverick than taking an underdog on the road that is 5-4 against the spread this season? What makes this a real roll of the dice is that the Bruins are only 5-5 against the spread, so this is a pure gamblers’ hunch.

Oh, did I mention ASU has only covered once in their last six trips to the Rose Bowl? Ignore that bad feeling welling up in your stomach, drop your holiday bonus on the Sun Devils and make your next drink a double.

Wisconsin vs. Northwestern (+7)

If you want to prove your degenerate might, then you’ll lay your car payment on the Wildcats this weekend. Forget about that other Big 10 game this weekend in Ann Arbor, Ryan Field is where the action is!

All those fancy numbers the liberal media tosses out will tell you to take the Badgers. Time to go rogue! Wisconsin hasn’t covered in 5 consecutive trips to Northwestern and in the last 10 meetings between these schools the Wildcats have covered 7 of those times. This one is a Pepto-Bismol and vodka special. Keep that flask handy.

“Ridicule is the tribute paid to the genius by the mediocrities.” – Oscar Wilde

If Allen Iverson is the answer, then most of us never knew the question. Therein lies the conundrum that defines the most transcendent player of his generation.

The post-Jordan basketball world just wasn’t ready for Iverson. While we were expecting a six foot, six inch two-guard with a marketable personality to inherit the throne, a five foot, eleven inch dynamo with a non-conformist attitude appeared.

He is the modern day anti-hero. His raspy voice is more suited for a Sergio Leone flick than it was ever meant to be heard by the target audience for Space Jam 2. Needless to say, nobody was ever going to have to airbrush anything Michael Jordan related. Not the case when it came to Iverson.

The difference is that Iverson never wanted to be like Mike. He wanted to destroy him. Our society rejects idol crushers. Just ask Kobe Bryant.

A.I. doesn’t give the company line. He is what Dave Chappelle had in mind for his “When Keeping it Real Goes Wrong” sketch. Then again, it’s not like Sir Charles was much of a likeable personality either. I guess we choose to make exceptions for some. Unlike Barkley, Iverson never spit on a little girl, but he might as well have for the way his character was hung on the cross.

You’re not really sure if you like A.I. or not. Then, he shows up in your city and proceeds to demolish your team with a barrage of lighting quick moves and deadly step backs, all the while fearlessly attacking the rim like he is unaware of being the smallest man in the land of NBA giants.

You might not like him, but you’re given no choice except to respect his game.

One of the best kept secrets in pro football is that halfway through every NFL season, the commissioner meets with the owners of the worst teams in the league. In order to maintain the integrity of the product on the field it has become necessary for the least successful teams to report directly to the NFL.

Through sources that will remain anonymous, SD has attained a transcript of the meeting that occurred at the league offices in New York this week.

Roger Goodell: I’d like to thank you all for attending today. As you know, this is just a formality and all we’re doing here is checking in to make sure you’re still doing all you can to put a quality team on the field every week.

Al Davis: Why the hell isn’t the Ford family here?

Roger Goodell: Understandable, Mr. Davis. Just to clarify, the Lions will not be represented today by the Fords as they were unaware that they even owned an NFL franchise until my office contacted them. However, they did promise me to look at the standings at least once a month and to bench their starting quarterback every other week.

Clark Hunt: Well, what about the Rams? Why aren’t they represented in this room?

Al Davis: Yeah! You get Frontiere in here now, Goodell! Her team is as useless as Darrius Heyward-Bey’s hands.

Roger Goodell: To be fair, we enacted the Tony Mandarich rule for the Rams this year. This, as you all know, grants a waiver for any team that selects an offensive lineman in first five picks of the draft.

Now at days we like our sports served up in a microwave minute. There’s no time to let things marinate then simmer to a slow cooked boil. Give it to me in five minutes or less! I’m busy, got places to go and nude videos of Erin Andrews to see.

That is our mentality in this modern age. We want our headlines to echo the entire story. No need to delve deep into the topic. Just condense it into an easily digestible format and trim the fat.

Well, I’ve got news for you skinny America. The fat is where all the flavor is and not everything can be summed up in a catchy headline. Some things are just too complex for the douchebags at TMZ to sum up with their judgmental banter.

We think that with all the media coverage that we know these pro athletes. We assume that what’s reported is all there is to know.

WRONG!

Sometimes there is much more going on beneath the surface. Sometimes those still waters run as deep as the money pit Nicolas Cage finds himself in. Sometimes we’re unable to separate the man from his art. Sometimes we assume we know things when all we know is that when you “assume” you make an “ass” out of “u” and “me”.

Here are 10 athletes you think you know from the headlines but really know nothing about at all.

For a nation founded on democratic principles, we sure do subscribe to the communist manifesto when it comes to our sports. No matter how bad our favorite teams get, we just sit back and admire the mess, proud of the God given right to be awful and to suffer no consequences for it.

Somehow I don’t think that the original signers of the declaration of independence intended for Pittsburgh Pirate fans to be given free will to root aimlessly for a team that will never see .500 again.

We might be a nation too ignorant to appreciate the nuisances of soccer but that doesn’t mean we can’t adopt some winning principles from the world’s most popular sport.

In England, if you’re football team can’t hang with the big boys then they get sent down to play with the toddlers.

In Brazil, you’re sorry excuse for a soccer team won’t be given any handouts. If they finish near the bottom then they’re headed to the second division.

Most every professional soccer league worldwide – except MLS in North America – has adopted the policy of relegating the bottom teams in the top division to the second tier. Once relegated, those franchises are faced with tough decisions and face the possibility of being wiped off the face of the map if they can’t maintain.

In turn, the top teams from the second division get promoted for a shot at the big time in the top tier.

Not here in the U.S. of A. We much prefer our owners to be complacent and sit on their fat wallets while robbing their community blind.

Imagine a world where the 0-16 Detroit Lions are sent down to the UFL where they’ll have to earn the right to play in the NFL again.
