For the loyal Black&Teal readers, that was a play on the usual title of this weekly column. Good fun, right? I think we could all use a little laugh right now, because honestly, this season has been a tough one to digest. Here are 5 things I think about the Jaguars.

1. I think we all need some time apart. Every week, we come back looking for some bright spots and every week, it only seems that the 2011 Jaguars are crawling deeper into a black hole. Even if there are bright spots (and I believe there are some), no one wants to talk about them and trying to talk about them feels dispassionate and unsatisfying. The O-Zone is a cesspool of hate. The Jaguars.com message board is a cesspool of brainless hate (as always). Even Twitter is a cesspool of irrational and impatient hate – which is surprising, because most of the people I follow are other Jaguars bloggers (ALWAYS wise and rational and pragmatic…/sarcasm), beat writers for the Jaguars and AFC South (professional journalists), and fans that I normally consider to have something semi-thoughtful to say. It’s all gone in the toilet this week, so I suggest that everyone just take a break. It seems bleak today, but things will eventually get better. Well, this season’s playoffs hopes are gone and they aren’t coming back until next year. So I’ll do what I’ve done for the last couple of years and provide you with my “expert” break down of the Jaguars roster and where I think the team needs lie.  I’ve decided to do the breakdown earlier this year because of how the season has gone. After what may have been the most turbulent week in the franchise history, the Jacksonville Jaguars can now shift their focus back to football and the the next opponent, the San Diego Chargers. Norv Turner’s perennially disappointing team has lost six games in a row and appear as if they will again miss the playoffs, despite having one of the most talented rosters in the NFL.  The Jaguars have plenty of issues as well, but this could be a winnable game for them and a good opportunity for interim head coach Mel Tucker to make a statement in his quest to win the job for the long term. The Chargers are still a star-studded team and will have the advantage of several mismatches against the Jaguars.  Let’s see where the home team can make up ground and what matchups we should really be worrying about.

There is no spin for this game. There is no drama to be injected into the storyline of Sunday’s game by even the most imaginative of journalists. No inspiration to be mined from another sordid performance at Everbank Field. Even the few players that managed to play soundly yesterday are truthfully no longer fueled by any kind of inspiration, but a distanced and robotic dedication to their craft – Paul Posluszny, Jeremy Mincey, Maurice Jones-Drew, Daryl Smith – the vital cogs of the Jaguars who have survived the rash of injuries plaguing the roster in recent weeks and still show up day in and day out. Despite the Houston Texans showing up in Jacksonville with their starting quarterback on IR and only Matt Leinart (who only lasted one half and is now likely to head to IR, as well) and a rookie QB no on had heard of before yesterday to lead their offense, the Jaguars still showed no second gear with the smell of blood in the water. With the 2011 season rapidly becoming a nearly hopeless situation for the Jaguars, I take comfort in knowing that whatever happens this offseason will be a restart, much like shaking an Etch-a-Sketch.  The main components will still be there, Blaine Gabbert, Maurice Jones-Drew, Gene Smith (if he accepts his contract extension), TnT, a pair of solid safeties, solid corners, and developing linebackers; but there will be a new direction, a new approach, and new gains made.

1. I think Del Rio’s fate is sealed and his tombstone will read, “Had Nine Lives. Used them all.” I thought that the tumultuous nature of the last year for Jacksonville would favor Del Rio surviving for one final “show me” year, but I can’t imagine that scenario happening anymore. Wayne Weaver has already stood before the Jaguars fans more than once to give Del Rio the “playoffs or bust” ultimatum following a disappointing season and he won’t be putting them through that again. I do believe that Jack has a lot of the right ideas and has put together a cohesive football team that believes in his message. He is a good leader. But eventually, you gotta deliver the goods. No doubt, Jack has had to deal with unfortunate circumstances (Leftwich not panning out, years without legitimate receiving threats, the 2008 Draft, all of the damage Shack Harris did, the Lockout, the Garrard situation this preseason, Blaine Gabbert’s rookie inconsistency), but successful leaders find a way to achieve their objectives in spite of difficult circumstances, rather than relying on the circumstances as an excuse for why they didn’t succeed. We all know the numbers – the Jaguars have been to the playoffs twice in Del Rio’s nine seasons, they have one playoff win, and he’s a sub-.500 head coach with 69 wins and 72 losses. It just seems like when the Jaguars fall apart the worst in the games they should win or have to win. There have been too many farces that, regardless of talent level of the players on the field, are the product of sub-par coaching – penalties, poor clock management, general lack of awareness, sloppy executive of the fundamentals. I’m also unconvinced that he and his staff are great at developing draft picks – sure, we’ve had bad drafting in years past, but how many players seem like their talent and potential have been maximized by working with this coaching staff? He’s a likeable guy and I think he’s brought some great character and passion to this football team, but it’s time to move on and I expect Wayne Weaver to do so immediately following the season. … [visit site to read more]

After last week’s must win game against the Colts, the Jacksonville Jaguars head up north to play against the Cleveland Browns. We can safely agree that  the Colts are the worst football team in the entire NFL and the Jaguars may now be playing the second worst team. Cleveland is on a three game losing streak, haven’t scored a touchdown at home since October 2nd against the Titans and last week they got beaten by the St Louis Rams at home. They can’t run the ball and can’t defend the run either. Sounds like an easy victory for the visitors right? Well, not so fast.

The biggest reason not to be overconfident about this game is that these two teams look very similar. Both teams have a Top 10 overall defense. Both teams have a young QB with growing pains. Both teams have issues with scoring this season. Both teams have a play maker on offense (for the Jaguars Maurice Jones-Drew, for the Browns Joshua Cribbs). And both teams are standing 3-6 after 9 games. I say Cleveland is on a very similar talent level with Jacksonville, so this game could be another one of those barometer games. 1. I think that right now, the frustrating struggles we’re seeing on offense are keeping us from admiring what is a truly remarkable turnaround on defense. It’s an offensive league and the Jaguars drafted a rookie quarterback in the top 10 and had a highly publicized fallout with David Garrard just moments before the regular season began. That’s gonna turn some eyes towards the offense. But last year, fans and pundits were appalled at how soft and relenting our defense was – 28th in pass defense, 28th overall, and 30th in sacks after pledging to turn around the pass rush after the God-awful 2009 pass rush. The Jaguars defense was sieve and no one had trouble sleeping the night before playing us. All of  a sudden, there are no guarantees in the AFC South. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting via Twitter that Texans quarterback Matt Schaub is out for the season with a lis franc injury. This is an epic blow to the Texans’ playoff chances, who have been running away with the division in the absence of Peyton Manning’s perennial regular season dominance with the Colts. After already losing Mario Williams early in the season and star wideout Andre Johnson missing significant, this is most likely the death knell for the Texans, who likely would have found a way to lose the division anyways. Things can change really fast in the NFL. The best example is the Colts and the Jaguars. 11 months ago on Week 15 these two teams played the AFC South Championship game (Indy won that game 34-24). Now the two team has a combined record of 2-15, and the Colts is the only team still looking for their 1st win in the ’11 season. Some say this game belongs to the ‘Suck for Andrew Luck’ tournament. For the Colts maybe that can be true, but for the Jaguars this will be a very good barometer how there team (and most of all) there offense progressed in the last few weeks. Until recently, the Jaguars played against 4 very good teams in a row. All 4 (Bengals, Steelers, Ravens, Texans) have elite defenses. But now Jacksonville will play probably the worst team in the league right now. The Colts defense is ranked 31st in the league on offense (the only team behind them are the Jaguars…) and defense. They allowed the most points in the first 9 weeks (but sadly the Jaguars scored the least on offense as well). Colts and Jaguars played closed games, even when one of the team (Yeah the Jaguars) was often not belonged to the very best of the NFL. Jacksonville made one of the most underrated additions to their defense of the entire off-season, when they were able to steal Paul Posluszny away from the Buffalo Bills. He led the squad for four years with a staggering 8.8 tackles per game, and has already filled the hole in the middle of the Jags’ defense that has been there for a decade. While some of us have given up hope on the playoffs, the super bowl, and contention for the AFC South crown, there are still things to hope for in Jacksonville.  Entering the second half of the season, the only chance the Jags have at making the playoffs is if they somehow manage to win eight straight and finish 10-6 (maybe good enough for a wildcard?) but the odds of this occurring are slimmer than a Hollywood starlet.  So, what can we look forward to?

If there is one thing the Jags’ do consistently, it is establishing the running game behind Maurice Jones-Drew; which leaves plenty of opportunities to take shots down the field.  Receiver Jason Hill has become the best downfield target for an otherwise mundane Jacksonville offense, and the 26-year old has made some critical plays this year.  Hill is having a career season in 2011 with 306 receiving yards and has really caught rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert’s eye. … [visit site to read more]

As the Jags head into the bye week, they look forward to two very winnable games.  The Colts in week ten and the Browns in week eleven.  If this were a normal year, the Colts would probably have 0-2 losses and would be a formidable foe requiring intense preparation and development in the off week.  But this year, the Jags can focus on getting back to the basics, practicing harder and, hopefully, coming out of the bye week more refined.

Well Jag fans, it looks to be an almost certainty that the Jaguars are out of the playoff race and unless Gabbert just begins to get it after the bye, they are definitely out. However, don’t look at this as a bad thing. We all knew that as soon as Garrard was cut, McCown bombed and Gabbert took the reins, that the season was in jeopardy. We knew a rookie QB was more then likely going to struggle, but little did we know how much. Now, it isn’t all his fault and I’m not the only one to think this (see: Country, Big Cat), but its obvious Gabbert and the offense need some help. After the big upset victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night, the Jaguars have no time to celebrate. They are on the short week to prepare against another very powerful opponent, the division rival (and currently leader of the AFC South) Houston Texans. Once again Jack Del Rio’s team is playing against a Top 10 defense, but this time it has a very powerful offense too. To make this game even more important, this is a big one for the Jaguars. If they lose this, they’ll fall behind 3 games to the Texans (with Houston having a tie breaker advantage over them), which make the Jaguars playoff chances very small. But if Jacksonville wins this game, they can go to their bye week with a 1 game gap behind the Texans (and probably the Tennessee Titans) with a tie breaker advantage (in both cases). In his first start of the year, Tim Tebow shocked the world by leading the Broncos to a nail-biting 18-15 win in overtime last weekend.  Tebow looked extremely erratic when throwing the ball in the first three quarters; but he amazingly looked like John Elway in the fourth.  He only completed 13 passes out of 27 attempts for 161 yards, but he completed the couple passes that really mattered to win the game.  He was composed while inside the pocket, but he was not very accurate with only a 48.1% completion percentage.  Tebow did throw two touchdowns in the win despite having one of the worst receiver cores in the entire NFL. … [visit site to read more]

• 1. In retrospect, the MNF matchup with the Ravens was more of a Must-Win than we ever realized. Had the Jaguars lost, the national media wouldn’t have made much fuss about it or been surprised at all – we were expected to be crushed. But if you’ve had your finger on the pulse of the Jaguars’ locker room, you could hear a desperation lingering just below the layers of coachspeak and cookie-cutter upbeat responses. We’ve heard for a few years now about the positive momentum and good vibes  in the lockerroom, that this is a team that works hard and stays optimistic. After five tough-luck losses, it’s human nature to get down and to question what you’re doing. I wondered if the Jaguars were in jeopardy of turning on themselves if the losses kept stacking up. But that curse has been broken – our guys received a tremendous dose of validation for their hard work and grind-it-out attitude and on the national stage, no less. They physically dominated a team that was supposed to come into Everbank and wax our asses while Jaws, Chucky, and the Gang all piled it on from the booth. I’m with Jason – the national opinion be damned. This team is closer than they realize and maybe even than we realize.
