The Buffalo Bills have signed four of their 2013 draft picks on Friday by announcing the signings of Texas Longhorns wide receiver Marquise Goodwin (third-round), Nevada Wolf Pack safety Duke Williams (fifth-round), Clemson Tigers defensive back Jonathan Meeks (sixth-round) and Florida State Seminoles kicker Dustin Hopkins (sixth-round).

This group of players joins seventh-round tight end Chris Gragg of Arkansas, who signed late last night.

Teams are working hard to get their rookies under contract in time for the rookie minicamps.

Buffalo’s top three picks — EJ Manuel, Robert Woods and Kiko Alonso — have not yet been signed. It will likely only be a matter of tie until the players are under contract.

Out of the Bills rookies under contract, Goodwin is the most exciting .

He was an Olympic athlete and he certainly has the elite speed and vision you need to be a true playmaker in the NFL. When you looked at players like Tavon Austin in this year’s draft class, Goodwin was right up there as one of the most exciting players with the ball in their hands.

The Detroit Lions have become the first team to get all of their 2013 NFL Draft picks under contract. Early on Friday the team came to an agreement with second-round selection Darius Slay and now they have locked up their final selection. The team announced they have agreed to a contract with first-round pick Ezekiel Ansah, who was the No. 5 overall pick in the draft.

According to the team’s release, this is the earliest the Lions have agreed to a deal with a first-round pick since 2009 when they locked up Matthew Stafford before selecting him No. 1 overall.

Ansah should immediately compete for a starting position.

Outside of Ansah and Slay, the Lions rookie class included guard Larry Warford, defensive end Devin Taylor, punter Sam Martin, receiver Corey Fuller, running backTheo Riddick, tight end Michael Williams and linebacker Brandon Hepburn.

Rookie camp starts today, so all of the players are ready to get rolling and learn the ropes of the NFL.

The Cincinnati Bengals selected one of the most athletic players in 2013 NFL Draft class when they selected former SMU Mustangs defensive standout Margus Hunt. There is a lot to love about Hunt when you consider his incredible upside to pair with his size/speed/strength ratio. However, it looks like the Bengals are preparing to bring him along slowly.

Hunt will be buried on the team’s defensive end depth chart thanks to the level of talent the team currently has at that position.

With the surplus of talent, the Bengals can afford to keep Hunt inactive while he learns the ropes of the NFL. It is the perfect scenario for the Estonian American.

From the Bengals official website:

This weekend should also be a good gauge about just where Hunt is in his development as a relatively new player compared to other top college prospects. A mini Senior Bowl, if you will. Plus, the Bengals can go back and look at other ends they’ve had in this camp recently, such as Michael Johnson and Carlos Dunlap, and make the comparison. The parlor game to play on Hunt is picking the regular-season game they’ll suit him up for the first time. He could go awhile before he gets his shot and that should suit his development.

In essence, the Bengals can “redshirt” Hunt if they don’t believe he is ready for action.

If Hunt were forced in to immediate action, it could hurt his career. You never want to start a player before they are ready for action, so the Bengals would be doing Hunt a favor. You don’t want to hurt the player’s confidence, especially when they have as much potential as a player like Hunt.

With time and the right guidance, he could be poised for stardom in the league.

With NFL teams around the league working hard to get their rookie class under contract with rookie minicamps coming up, a number of teams have signed a bulk of their 2013 NFL Draft classes. The latest team to announce a number of signings is the New Orleans Saints, who signed first-round pick Kenny Vaccaro. With the deal, Vaccaro becomes the first first-round draft pick to ink a contract.

Along with Vaccaro, the Saints were able to agree to deals with three other members of the rookie class.

The other signees include: Arkansas Pine-Bluff offensive tackle Terron Armstead (second-round), Oklahoma wide receiver Kenny Stills (fifth-round) and Tarlton State linebacker Rufus Johnson (sixth-round).

That leaves third-round defensive tackle John Jenkins out of Georgia as the lone unsigned draft pick.

Vaccaro will provide an immediate boost to the Saints secondary and it was crucial to get him under contract and in camp. His speed and versatility is going to be very welcomed in the defensive backfield. It would not be a surprise to see Vaccaro beat out veteran Roman Harper as the starting safety across from Malcolm Jenkins.

That leaves first-round selection DJ Fluker of Alabama and Cal defensive back Steve Williams (fifth-round). While the two rookies remain unsigned, you should expect to see them in rookie camp, via Michael Gehlken of the U-T San Diego.

Te’o is expected to be a starter from game one opposite Donald Butler, while Keenan Allen could make an immediate push for playing time as the team’s No. 2 receiver if he is able to get to 100 percent as he continues to recover from a torn PCL and ankle issues.

The Dallas Cowboys selected former Baylor wide receiver Terrance Williams in the third-round of the 2013 NFL Draft to fill the No. 3 spot on the team’s wide receiver depth chart. After Laurent Robinson had a breakout year in that role that he turned in to a big free agent contract, Kevin Ogletree failed to live up to the expectations last season. Now, Williams will step in to the role likely from day one and he will have a lot of help.

Cowboys wide receivers Dez Bryant and Miles Austin are thrilled for the arrival of Williams in Big D and they are prepared to welcome him with open arms and mentor him along the way.

“He’s a great receiver,” Bryant said, according to Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “He can stretch the field. He can go deep. He can make a short-yardage play go long. He’s got that type of ability. He can go up and grab the ball. That’s what you want in the guy.”

Austin was equally as excited saying, “From what I’ve seen, I think he’s a tremendous player. He seems like a really nice humble guy on the interviews and everything like that. I’m going to try to teach him things and learn things from him. I’m sure he has things he’s done over there. But just try to bring as many of the guys along as we can.”

If the Cowboys receivers can help Williams learn the ropes of the NFL and help him maximize his talent, the third-round pick could prove to be a steal.

There were a number of NFL talent evaluators that had Williams as a first-round talent, but he fell to the third. With the mentoring of Austin and Bryant, Williams should be able to fulfill his talent and eventually take over the No. 2 wide receiver spot, which would allow the team to move on from Miles Austin next offseason.

With the multiple announcements around the league of 2013 NFL draftees reaching agreements for their rookie contracts, the Philadelphia Eagles decided to join the mix with the signing of four members of their 2013 draft class.

The Eagles announced the official signings of Stanford tight end Zach Ertz (second-round), North Carolina State safety Earl Wolff (fifth-round), Utah Utes defensive end Joe Kruger (seventh-round), Oregon State cornerback Jordan Poyer (seventh-round) and Oklahoma defensive end David King (seventh-round).

That leaves the Eagles with just three unsigned draft picks — Oklahoma offensive tackle Lane Johnson (first-round), LSU defensive tackle Bennie Logan (third-round) and USC quarterback Matt Barkley (fourth-round).

Out of the four players who were signed, Ertz is the most likely to make an immediate impact.

Wolff and Poyer will focus their attention on special teams during their rookie seasons, while defensive linemen Kruger and King look to work their way in to the defensive rotation, which will be no easy task. Third-rounder Bennie Logan is much more likely to find his way in to the lineup in his first NFL season.

The NFC North continues to get their 2013 NFL Draft selections under contract in a fast and furious manner. The latest rookie player to agree to terms with his new team former Florida Gators linebacker and second-round pick Jon Bostic. With Bostic under contract with the Chicago Bears, he has become the highest drafted player to sign his rookie deal — the honor previously went to Larry Warford of the Detroit Lions, who signed earlier today.

Chicago announced the signing of Bostic on Twitter Thursday afternoon:

LM: #Bears have agreed to terms with second-round draft pick Jon Bostic on four-year contract.

— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) May 9, 2013

Bostic was the No. 50 overall player to be drafted in last month’s draft.

The former Gator is not expected to immediately start at middle linebacker because free agent signee D.J. Williams is the favorite to start that position, but Bostic is the team’s middle linebacker of the future.

His initial reps in the starting linebacker will likely come at strong side backer.

The Detroit Lions have been on a tear signing draft picks and the latest has become third-round selection Larry Warford. The former Kentucky guard becomes the highest drafted player to agree to terms at this point. Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free-Press had the report.

More rookie deals coming in: #Lions have agreed to terms with 3rd-rounder Larry Warford. Got 4 done Wed, most of rest should be done today

— Dave Birkett (@davebirkett) May 9, 2013

It is always nice to get your draft picks signed early, so kudos to the Lions for making quick work of the process.

Another positive for the Lions is the impression Warford left on former Pro Bowl center LeCharles Bentley. Birkett passed along a story earlier on Thursday that shed some light on Warford’s work ethic, which has to be exciting and very welcomed for the Lions.

“Larry says, ‘Hey, we’re training on Christmas, right?’ Wow,” Bentley stated, per the Detroit Free-Press. “He could have gone and ate cake and stuff and had a good old time on Christmas Day, but Larry Warford wanted to come into the gym and work on Christmas Day. And not do arms and not do upper body, he wanted to do legs. There aren’t many players that want to train legs on any given day, especially on Christmas Day.”

If he brings that work ethic to to Detroit, the fans and team will be more than satisfied with their third-rounder.

Former Alabama Crimson Tide star Eddie Lacy entered the 2013 NFL Draft as the top-rated running back by a number of scouts and members of the draftnik community, but he fall on draft day and wasn’t selected until the bottom of round two by the Green Bay Packers. One of the teams that was expected to select Lacy was the Denver Broncos, but Denver passed on the Alabama rusher in favor of Wisconsin’s Montee Ball.

While it was surprising to see Lacy fall in the draft, Broncos director of player personnel Matt Russell shed some light on why the team went with Ball instead.

From Lindsay Jones of USA TODAY Sports:

Matt Russell said Broncos liked Eddie Lacy but back off because of concerns about his toe and how many yrs he could play.

— Lindsay Jones (@bylindsayhjones) May 7, 2013

That is very troubling for Lacy, but it certainly explains why a number of running back needy teams passed on his services.

As an endorsement for Ball, VP John Elway compared the team’s rookie to former Broncos star running back Terrell Davis.

If Ball can live up to that comparison and Lacy’s toe/foot becomes a serious issue moving forward, then the Broncos will have clearly made the right decision to pass on the national champion in favor of the Wisconsin product.

Only time will tell.

The Detroit Lions selected former Mississippi State cornerback Darius Slay in the second-round of the 2013 NFL Draft, but he will not participate in the team’s rookie minicamp after going under the knife. Slay suffered a torn meniscus during his Pro Day, but the Lions thought he would be able to avoid surgery. Unfortunately, that is not the truth.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

Lions’ 2nd-rd pick Darius Slay underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Friday, but is expected to be ready well before training camp.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) May 7, 2013

The good news for Detroit is that Slay should be ready for training camp, which is very important in order for him to have success as a rookie.

Surgery was ultimately the right decision for Slay and it should not cause concern for the Lions or their fans.

Instead of coming taking it easy during minicamps and OTA’s while risking further injury, Slay will have his knee at 100 percent heading in to the most crucial part of preparation for the upcoming season.

Fashion has become a large part of the discussion during major sporting events and Detroit Lions first-round draft pick Ezekiel Ansah stole the show on draft day when he sported some 3D glasses for a little extra flair. Ansah apparently received the glasses when he went to the theaters to see “Thor” and he hung on to them in a move that has now paid off.

According to Brian Manzullo of theDetroit Free Press, Ansah has been offered free admission to IMAX movies for a year.

IMAX reached out to Ansah in a letter to offer him the free year of movies:

“We, at IMAX, couldn’t help but notice your keen sense of style at the NFL draft this year. You made quite a fashion statement with your pair of 3D glasses. As a member of the Detroit Lions, you share our love for the color blue and we would like to add an IMAX silver lining for you – we would love to celebrate your first year in the NFL with the opportunity to see all IMAX 3D movies on us for the next year.”

It was a nice gesture, but with Ansah being a top five NFL Draft selection he certainly doesn’t need the free tickets, but maybe he can hook up some fans with a free viewing.

In other news: Hipsters everywhere are wondering why they never received free movies for a year for wearing their lensless frames.

It is never too early to begin signing draft picks, so you can understand why the Bears continue to beat the rest of the league to the jump.

With two of the late-round picks now under contract, it will be interesting to see how quickly the team can sign their early picks.

The Buffalo Bills made an interesting choice when they decided to draft former Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel in round one ahead of signal-callers like Geno Smith, who was believed to be the top quarterback in the 2013 class. One of the big knocks on Smith’s game, however, was his struggles in bad weather.

In Buffalo, there are clearly some tough conditions that the quarterbacks will be faced to play in and it was that factor that led the Bills to Manuel.

He conducted a workout in less than ideal conditions with some strong winds and thunderstorms before and during his session at Florida State. It was his resilience during the workout that really put him ahead of the group in the eyes of Buffalo head coach Doug Marrone.

“I remember when I first got the job here in Buffalo, and I had been up here and played up here before, and I got out of the car in January and the wind I was like, ‘Wow.’ I never realized how windy it was that time of the year,” Marrone said on SiriusXM radio, according to the team’s official website.

“We started talking about the quarterbacks, and we went back and researched all the teams that played in the Northeast in the bad weather and all the success they had with quarterbacks and the common traits that they had. They were big and had big hands and were able to throw the ball in tough weather and that’s what we were looking at.”

Hopefully for the Bills and Manuel, he can continue to succeed in less than stellar conditions. He will need to do that on a regular basis and take the Bills to the next level if he hopes to live up to his draft position.

Former Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers had off-field issues that scared teams off and resulted in him going undrafted in the 2013 NFL Draft, but the Buffalo Bills decided to give him a chance.

Bills GM Buddy Nix said that the team had a first/second-round grade on the troubled receiver and they understand his background and feel comfortable giving him a shot.

“Being from Tennessee, I’ve known his background,” Nix said on The John Murphy Show, via BuffaloBills.com. “He’s from Calhoun, Georgia, I knew him when he was playing in high school. The guy’s got tremendous talent. He’s made some bad decisions. It’s gotten him in trouble.

“Got him out of the University of Tennessee, from an All-SEC performance in his sophomore year, and he goes to Tennessee Tech where he has a so-so year. He played down to the level of competition, really. But this guy’s talented. He can play. The ball’s in his court. He goes by the rules, and does like he’s supposed to, or he goes somewhere else.”

He definitely has the talent to make an impact at the next level, but he will have to show he has matured and can handle the pressure of being a NFL talent.

If Rogers can get it all together, he has every chance to earn the team’s No. 2 or No. 3 wide receiver spot.

The Philadelphia Eagles traded up to the first pick in round four of the 2013 NFL Draft to select former USC Trojans signal-caller Matt Barkley. It was immediately believed that the Eagles traded with the Jacksonville Jaguars in order to get ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs who were looking to select Barkley with the No. 99 overall pick, but drafting Barkley doesn’t appear to have ever crossed the Chiefs mind.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke with WHB in Kansas City and said that the rumors of the Chiefs interest in Barkley was laughable.

“Well, we weren’t going there,” Reid said, via NFL.com. “I actually was on the phone with Nick Saban from Alabama before that day ever started, so that’s just not the direction [we were going]. We had pinpointed (Alabama linebacker) Nico (Johnson) and that’s who we were going after.

“I know how rumors start and how people justify picks and all this other stuff, but I think if you look at our roster, we’ve got Akeem Jordan at middle linebacker; that’s the only player that we have there. … That rumor started and I heard it, and I had to laugh at it. That wasn’t even in the picture.”

If the thought to draft Barkley really didn’t ever cross Reid’s mind, then he pulled a fast one on his former employer and got an even bigger laugh out of the whole ordeal.

By grabbing Johnson, the Chiefs got a perfect fit for the middle of their defense and they later added a talented young quarterback in Tyler Bray after the draft as an undrafted free agent. Bray’s skill set is not much worse than Barkley’s and he certainly has a bigger arm that could lead to success at the next level.

The Chiefs did an excellent job in the 2013 NFL Draft and, while it could be a stressful time trying to analyze all of the talent and not slip up, Reid and company were able to find some simple entertainment thanks to a few rumors.

For the seventh year in a row, the Southeastern Conference has dominated the NFL Draft. It should come as no surprise with the conference’s stranglehold on college football, but it just goes to show how impressive the level of talent in the SEC really is.

It is not the media hyping up the conference, it is simply the coaches recruited elite talent to play at the highest level college football has to offer.

A total of 63 players — almost 25 percent of the players drafted in 2013 — hailed from the SEC. Out of the 63 players selected, 33 were drafted within the first 99 picks, including ten first-round selections.

While the SEC dominated the draft, there was only one school in the conference that did not have a single player selected — Ole Miss.

Of course, when you check out the impressive recruiting class the Rebels were able to put together this season it is only a matter of time until they get back to producing top level talent. The fact that the university produced no NFL Draft selections this year just makes the ability to recruit the level of talent they did that much more impressive.

In 2014, it is very likely that the SEC will once again be the most prominent division in the NFL Draft, but will the Rebels be able to join the party? You would have to believe so.

There have been stars all around the league that emerge from the undrafted free agent ranks and this year will be no different.

All of the players will have an uphill battle if they hope to make the Bills roster, but you can never count these motivated players out. Remember, current NFL starters like Arian Foster, Tony Romo and Wes Welker have all emerged from the UDFA ranks.

NOTE: Lists of undrafted free agents have been put together by gathering info from multiple media sources around the Internet, including NEPatriotsDraft.com.

Ray Holley, RB, Louisiana Tech

Murphy Holloway, TE, Ole Miss

Moe Lee, CB, Utah

Gerrard Sheppard, WR, Towson

Nate Stanley, QB, Southeast Louisiana

Trent Steelman, QB, Army

Brynden Trawick, DB, Troy

All of the players will have an uphill battle if they hope to make the Ravens roster, but you can never count these motivated players out. Remember, current NFL starters like Arian Foster, Tony Romo and Wes Welker have all emerged from the UDFA ranks.

The 2013 NFL Draft has come and gone, and now it’s time for some reflection. While some teams traded around to get who they want, others stood pat to see who would slide to them — and if there’s one thing to remember about this draft it’s players that slid around the rounds. But now that the draft is behind us, the all important grading phase has begun, so lets take a look at how the Tennessee Titans did in this year’s NFL Draft.

Draft Picks

Chance Warmack, guard, Alabama — Round 1 (10)

Justin Hunter, wide receiver, Tennessee — Round 2 (34)

Blidi Wreh-Wilson, cornerback, Connecticut — Round 3 (70)

Zavier Gooden, linebacker, Missouri — Round 3 (97)

Brian Schwenke, guard, Cal — Round 4 (107)

Lavar Edwards, defensive end, LSU — Round 5 (142)

Khalid Wooten, cornerback, Nevada — Round 6 (202)

Daimon Stafford, safety, Nebraska — Round 7 (248)

Best Pick: Chance Warmack

After adding Andy Levitre in free agency, the Titans were able to continue their reconstruction of the offensive line by drafting one of the best offensive guard prospects to come around in the past decade. Warmack will help the Titans as they bring a new added toughness to the trenches and it was certainly a move that star running back Chris Johnson greatly appreciated.

Analysis: There is a good chance that the Titans top six players will have an impact on the team. Warmack and Schwenke are interior offensive linemen with a nasty mean stream who can start from day one, while Justin Hunter has the potential to develop in to a number one wide receiver. As far as Blidi Wreh-Wilson, he had generated some late first-round buzz, so the value on his pick was incredible. It was an overall great draft for the Titans.

2013 Draft Grade: A

The 2013 NFL Draft has come and gone, and now it’s time for some reflection. While some teams traded around to get who they want, others stood pat to see who would slide to them — and if there’s one thing to remember about this draft it’s players that slid around the rounds. But now that the draft is behind us, the all important grading phase has begun, so lets take a look at how the San Diego Chargers did in this year’s NFL Draft.

Draft Picks

DJ Fluker, offensive tackle, Alabama — Round 1 (11)

Manti Te’o, linebacker, Notre Dame — Round 2 (38)

Keenan Allen, wide receiver, Cal — Round 3 (76)

Steve Williams, cornerback, Cal — Round 5 (145)

Tourek Williams, defensive end, Florida International — Round 6 (179)

Brad Sorensen, quarterback, Southern Utah — Round 7 (221)

Best Pick: Keenan Allen

All three of the Chargers first picks will eventually be starters and big-time players for the franchise, but the best value came in round three. Keenan Allen was considered by many to be a first-round talent until late in the draft process because of a slow forty-yard dash time. Thanks to the less than stellar time, Allen slipped right in to the Chargers laps. There are many who believed Allen had the talent of a top twenty player, so you can understand the type of value the team got with this selection.

Worst Pick: Brad Sorensen

There was no need to select Sorensen. With some of the other quarterbacks who were still on the board, they could have gone with a better option or simply passed on quarterback and added another talented player. Sorensen would have been available as an undrafted free agent, but they chose to pull the trigger. It’s a shame that this pick ruined an otherwise flawless class.

2013 Draft Grade: A-

The 2013 NFL Draft has come and gone, and now it’s time for some reflection. While some teams traded around to get who they want, others stood pat to see who would slide to them — and if there’s one thing to remember about this draft it’s players that slid around the rounds. But now that the draft is behind us, the all important grading phase has begun, so lets take a look at how the Pittsburgh Steelers did in this year’s NFL Draft.

Draft Picks

Jarvis Jones, linebacker, Georgia — Round 1 (17)

Le’Veon Bell, running back, Michigan State — Round 2 (48)

Markus Wheaton, wide receiver, Oregon State — Round 3 (79)

Shamarko Thomas, safety, Syracuse — Round 4 (111)

Landry Jones, quarterback, Oklahoma — Round 4 (115)

Terry Hawthorne, cornerback, Illinois — Round 5 (150)

Justin Brown, wide receiver, Oklahoma — Round 6 (186)

Vince Williams, linebacker, Florida State — Round 6 (206)

Nick Williams, defensive tackle, Samford — Round 7 (223)

Best Pick: Jarvis Jones

Jarvis Jones had some medical concerns that hurt his draft stock, but it turned out to be the Steelers lucky day. Pittsburgh was able to land the pass rushing linebacker to replace James Harrison, who they parted ways with this offseason. There is no more perfect player than Jones to step in to Harrison’s vacant role.

Worst Pick: Landry Jones

Throughout his college career, there were very few bright spots in Landry Jones career where he looked like a NFL signal-caller. Jones is certainly a developmental quarterback who will eventually be given a chance to be the team’s back up, but you have to think that the more talented players like Tyler Bray, Matt Scott or even Zac Dysert would have been much better options for the team.

Analysis: Other than the Landry Jones pick, Pittsburgh did an excellent job in finding playmakers that can develop in to solid stars with their early picks. In the later rounds, the Steelers added some players who will likely make their impact on special teams as they stay hungry and fight for a spot in the rotations.

2013 Draft Grade: B

The 2013 NFL Draft has come and gone, and now it’s time for some reflection. While some teams traded around to get who they want, others stood pat to see who would slide to them — and if there’s one thing to remember about this draft it’s players that slid around the rounds. But now that the draft is behind us, the all important grading phase has begun, so lets take a look at how the Oakland Raiders did in this year’s NFL Draft.

Draft Picks

DJ Hayden, cornerback, Houston — Round 1 (12)

Menelik Watson, offensive tackle, Florida State — Round 2 (42)

Sio Moore, linebacker, Connecticut — Round 3 (66)

Tyler Wilson, quarterback, Arkansas — Round 4 (112)

Nick Kasa, tight end, Colorado — Round 6 (172)

Latavius Murray, running back, Central Florida — Round 6 (181)

Mychal Rivera, tight end, Tennessee — Round 6 (184)

Stacy McGee, defensive tackle, Oklahoma — Round 6 (205)

Brice Butler, wide receiver, San Diego State — Round 7 (209)

David Bass, defensive end, Missouri Western — Round 7 (233)

Best Pick: Menelik Watson

For once, the Raiders managed to work the NFL Draft in their favor. They got their main target in the first-round after trading back, but their best move was being able to select offensive tackle Menelik Watson in the second-round, despite an early run of offensive linemen. Oakland got one of the most athletic offensive tackle prospects with unlimited potential. If the coaches can take advantage of Watson’s skills, he will be a long-time starter for the team.

Analysis: It was refreshing to see the Raiders come away from the draft without being the laughing stock of the NFL. They were able to score talented draft picks in nearly every round, and a number of these players could prove to be key contributors a few years down the road.
