North Carolina State defensive back David Amerson entered the 2012-13 college football season as one of the top rated cornerbacks in the nation. Amerson had received high praise and was even viewed as a potential top ten pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
This season, Amerson took a step back and highlighted the concerns that scouts had in his game, but that hasn’t stopped him from making his next move.
Sources tell FanSided.com that Amerson will declare for the 2013 NFL Draft.
Despite taking a step back in production and being exposed for a lack of long speed, Amerson is ready to make the jump to the pros to showcase his skill.
“He is ready to make the move and there isn’t much anyone can do to convince him to stay,” one source said.
When another source was asked if Amerson was bolting for the NFL they said, “Yeah, he definitely is.”
While he does not have the same buzz as when he entered the season, Amerson could still be a top three pick thanks to his ball-hawking ability and his instincts to track down the ball.
The speed concerns could cause Amerson to be looked at as strictly a safety, but his size could garner him some looks from a Cover 2 team higher in the draft.
An early projection for Amerson would be the third or fourth-round.
