Support growing for Rick Renteria to become Chicago Cubs manager?

The Chicago Cubs were set to go all in on New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi, assuming he made it to ‘free agency’. Of course, the Yankees were able to re-sign Girardi, despite rumors suggesting the Cubs would offer more than the Yankees did.

Now void of their top target, the Cubs have been looking for a replacement to the fired Dale Sveum and according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria continues to get the most support:

The support for Rick Renteria is staggering and he has emerged as clear cut favorite to be #Cubs manager

Sans Girardi, the one thing the Cubs are reportedly looking for in a manager is the ability to connect with ‘young, Latin players’ as the Cubs’ farm system is currently stockpiled with them. Renteria is well known for his ability to do just that, so it might be a perfect match for both sides.

A.J. Hinch, Manny Acta and Dave Martinez have already interviewed for the job, though, have not (at least according to the rumor mill) had the same type of support Reneria has been given.
