NFL Overreactions Week 1: Jaguars lose, regain identity
Browns’ Brian Hoyer mans up in near comeback vs. Pittsburgh
Realizing that if he can’t spark a comeback after trailing by 24 at halftime against the Steelers on Sunday that he’d be replaced, Cleveland quarterback Brian Hoyer somehow grew a pair and nearly led the Browns to a crazy upset against Pittsburgh. With the comeback, Hoyer extends his relevancy in Cleveland for another week until he gets replaced by that rich brat rookie quarterback everyone thinks will be great. Remember, this is Cleveland we’re talking about.
The Steelers seemed to have the Browns handled easily on Sunday, and Johnny Manziel was almost on his way in weeks earlier than people may have thought. However, Brian Hoyer led the Browns on a furious comeback in the second half, scoring on their first four possessions in the second half to tie the game at 27. Ben Roethlisberger led the Steelers onto the game winning drive, ending in a 41-yard field goal by Shaun Suisham as time expired.
While some would have preferred to see Manziel takeover in the second half, Hoyer fought back and nearly led that Browns team to an upset win, proving to Cleveland that he can be a good quarterback for them, while making his case on film for other teams that may be interested in him in the future.
Hoyer should be able to hold onto the starting job for another week with his second half performance Sunday. At least, for another two weeks.
