The Los Angeles Lakers were decimated by injuries before the season even began. Point guard Steve Nash will miss the entire season with a back injury and swignman Nick Young has not played in a game after tearing a ligament in his right thumb prior to the season.

On Monday, Nick Young went through shooting drills, showing how close to a return he could be.

“This is another step in the process and taking that next step for Nick,” coach Byron Scott said via Arash Markazi of ESPN Los Angeles. “He was able to handle ball today and shoot. There’s still no contact. Hopefully next week sometime he’ll be able to go through a full day of contact and scrimmaging and then we’ll go from there.”

Now, according to Bill Oram of the Orange County Register, it looks Young may be back even sooner than we thought.

Young was a nice surprise for the Lakers last season, which is why they rewarded him with a four-year, $21.5 million deal in the offseason as a free agency. He should provide a nice lift for the Lakers offensively.

Young had the best season of his career in the 2013-2014 campaign. He averaged 17.9 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 43.5% from the field, 38.6% from beyond the arc and 82.5% from the free throw line. Young has averaged 12.2 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 42.9% from the floor, 37.7% from three and 82.7% from charity stripe in his career.
