Director Zack Snyder offered fans a glimpse at what to expect from Aquaman a year from now when the first Justice League film debuts.

We still have to wait over a year to watch the first Justice League film, to be directed by comic movie veteran Zack Snyder. The movie promises us both Superman and Batman at once, per the working title Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. From there, we’ve long been promised the rest of the seven superheroes that make up the Justice League, including Aquaman. We finally got a glimpse at what he might look like as played by the man formerly known as Khal Drogo, Jason Momoa.

We’re as helpless as a fourteen-year-old betrothed to horsebound warlord when faced with this portrayal of Aquaman. We were a little worried about the portrayal of this character in the 21st century when it was first announced. After all, the guy wore yellow spandex with green pants, which hasn’t always translated very well to an IMAX theater. We like our superheroes to be dark, gritty SOBs these days and there is nothing dark or gritty about yellow spandex with green spandex pants.

Apparently Zack Snyder agrees as he’s tossed aside the yellow and green in favor of something less traditional but far more awesome. The ‘Unite the Seven’ splayed across the picture presumably refers to the Justice League, which will likely be formed in the 2016 release of Batman v Superman, or at least alluded to much in the way that the Avengers were introduced through the plot of the first Iron Man film.

From there, Snyder has movies planned for each year that focus on the League. There are two Justice League films planned with a standalone Aquaman film to be wedged between them. Jason Momoa, who you know from the HBO hit series Game of Thrones, will play Aquaman and from the looks of it, he’ll play one fierce trident-wielding King of Atlantis.

Marvel set the bar for comic book-based films and now DC Comics is answering the bell once more in a big way. There’s a lot of risk in adapting a behemoth franchise like the Justice League, but from the initial look at a few supporting characters, it appears that this movie and the vision behind it remains strong with lots of potential for awesome cinema.
