The Masters: 10 dark horse golfers to win the Green Jacket
Fred Couples, U.S.A.
Freddy Couples is going to win the Masters this year. Sorry. Freddy Couples is going to win the first two rounds of the Masters this year like he is known to do at Augusta National before unfortunately running out of steam and giving the victory to a younger gentleman by the name of Bubba Watson or Charl Schwartzel or Bubba Watson.
Freddy Boom Boom as we like to call him in the golf community is undoubtedly a fan favorite especially among the 35-50 ages who grew up watching Couples be just cool and casual on the golf course and becoming a great golfer. Couples has 63 professional wins and has won just one PGA Tour major, the Masters in 1992. He’s had top fives in each other major.
In the last four Masters, Fred Couples has finished in the top 20 and has impressed even at the young age of 55 when he’s competing with much younger and stronger golfers. The thing is, Fred Couples walks around with the strut like he’s been there before, because he has, many times and he owns a Green Jacket. It’s not cocky, it’s calm, collected something that these young 20-somethings and even 30-somethings just don’t really have at Augusta National.
I like to think of Augusta National as the fountain of youth. You consistently get guys like Fred Couples, Berhard Langer, Ernie Els, David Toms and many more up at the top of the leaderboard at some point in the tournament. It’s spectacular and it’s fun to watch for all fans young and old to see these guys still competing with the best and brightest.
Freddy Boom Boom finished sixth in 2010, and has been a top-20 finisher every year since then. All Couples needs is a little stamina, which could definitely happen in the fourth round that keeps him at the top of the leaderboard and gives him his second Green Jacket.
Couples is a heartbreaker. He builds you up as a fan but unfortunately he lets us down when he struggles in the third or final rounds. In the last three pairs Saturday and Sunday rounds at the Masters, Couples has been +10, but still manages to finish top 20. If he can find a great third round and a way to hold on in the fourth, he could be your Masters champion this year. You think he’s not sick of being so close just to lose it all on Saturday or Sunday? Watch for a little fire in couples at Augusta. We’re all rooting for you, Freddy.
