Marcus Peters, CB, Washington

Questions about Marcus Peters begin with his dismissal from Washington back in early November. ESPN reported that it was after the last in a string of arguments with coaches, but the article quotes coach Chris Petersen as saying:

“It’s never one thing. We’re not going to dismiss a guy because it’s one thing,” Petersen said. “That’s not what we’re in this business [to be] about. But when you feel like it just can’t work, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.”

In Peters’ favor is the fact that Petersen and his staff suspended or dismissed eight players after arriving at Washington.

Still, it’s never good to see a guy sent away because of issues with coaches and it doesn’t speak highly of a guy’s willingness to listen to, and let himself be coached by, a staff.

Sure, he probably was upset the coach he signed on to play for was no longer there, but in the NFL, that happens all the time.

It’s not the only factor which should give teams pause about taking him with a high pick either. Peters’ apparent discipline and self-control issues bleed into his game where he sometimes seems to lack patience in man coverage and has sloppy technique and footwork overall.

Peters has some upside, but it’s hard to buy into some of the hype he’s had when you don’t know that you can trust him enough to take him in the first two days and have him meld well with your coaches.
