You’ll have to forgive Marlins shortstop Adeiny Hechaverria for the epic bat flip he threw down as he hit a two-run homer against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. He wasn’t just celebrating the home run, but also his 26th birthday. His teammates sang him Happy Birthday and clapped as he rounded the bases in the fifth after connecting with an 0-2 slider from Braves left-hander Eric Stults.
Hechaverria said after the game, which the Braves won 6-2, that he saw his teammates singing and clapping when he made it back to home plate and that it made him emotional. He’s had a sluggish start to the season, but in Wednesday’s game he saw three at-bats and he hit three times, knocking in two runs. His last two games he’s had two hits off five and three at-bats respectively.
The epic bat flip comes a day after bat flipper extraordinaire Yasiel Puig of the Dodgers told the LA Times that he wants to cut down on his bat flipping so no one gets the impression that he disrespects baseball. He’s already put that into practice as well, simply tossing his bat when he homered against the Mariners on Monday.
Of course, Puig also said that his bat flips were fueled by emotion and if he homers in a big situation or after he’s had trouble connecting, he can’t say that he won’t flip.
