Salma Hayek eats a real cricket (Video)

Actress Salma Hayek has posted a video on the internet of her eating an actual cricket.
Salma Hayek posted a video of herself eating a cricket on the internet. I’m not sure which grosses me out more, watching Salma Hayek eat a cricket, or listening to Salma Hayek eating a cricket. Either way, I’m not a fan.
Salma displays the cricket on her tongue for all to see before bringing the tasty morsel into her mouth. She then begins to chew it, which sounds like a potato chip…a potato chip with wings, a head, legs, eyes, and antennae.
Apparently the cricket is from Mexico. In Mexico, as well as many other parts of the world, the practice of eating insects is a common one. Apparently deep fried insects are popular in some areas of the world as well as candies with bugs inside of them.
The act of eating insects, or entomophagy, has long been considered taboo in Western culture. Why would you eat something so utterly terrifying? Apparently about 80% of the rest of the world disagrees with non-bug eaters.
But what if insect eating did catch on in Western culture? What if Chipotle offered Chicken, Beef, Steak, and Crickets? What if McDonalds offered a Double Quarter Pounder with a side of fried centipede? This probably will not happen any time in the near future. All it takes, though, is one simple shift in culture and the next thing you know you’re chowing down on some fried bugs from a street vendor on your way to the beach. But for now, us Westerners would rather have our triple cheesy bacon-rito-dilla Xtreme Burgers.
