Frank Miller has announced he will be writing a sequel to The Dark Knight Strikes Back.

Frank Miller, legendary graphic novelist, has announced he will return to DC comics to pen a third Dark Knight comic to follow The Dark Knight Returns and The Dark Knight Strikes Again.  It will be released as an eight-part miniseries titled, The Dark Knight III: The Master Race.

The Dark Knight Returns is often heralded as one of the best Batman comics of all time. The sequel, however, did not fare as well. It was panned by fans and critics alike because of the subpar artwork and writing. This is Miller’s chance to redeem his Batman name and write the story that Dark Knight fans deserve.

This is a smart money play on DC and Miller’s part. The upcoming film Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice has drawn many comparisons with Miller’s comic. In Miller’s comic, Batman and Superman do end up fighting with Batman donning a special suit just like the one seen in the upcoming film’s trailer. Fans awaiting the film’s release will no doubt discover this parallel and look to the comics for what could perhaps be a sneak peak at the movie’s plot. This is the perfect time for Miller to make a few more bucks by releasing yet another Batman comic.

The main difference between the first two installments and the third is that Miller does not plan on illustrating The Dark Knight III. This is an interesting move and the success or failure of the comic hinges on whether or not Miller picks a talented artist.

Fans may be skeptical of The Dark Knight III but Miller could make a really good comic. The Dark Knight Strikes Again was released in 2001. That means Miller has had over 14 years to improve as a writer. I am optimistic that Batman fans will be pleased with The Dark Knight III: The Master Race.
