New Kurt Cobain album coming out as early as this summer

Brett Morgan, the Director of Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,” had an interview with Bedford+Bowery where he released some interesting news regarding excess material found for the film. When asked what he was going to do with that material, Morgan announced that there will be a new Kurt Cobain album coming out as early as this summer.

Morgan described the to B+B album as saying

"“[It] will feel like you’re kind of hanging out with Kurt Cobain on a hot summer day in Olympia, Washington, as he fiddles about. It’s going to really surprise people.”"

The director said that he went through over 200 hours of tape recordings, and when released, these will not be of Nirvana, but rather just the front man.

"What exactly was on the tapes? The audio ran the gamut from jam sessions with Courtney, some jam sessions with various friends and Nirvana, his first demo tapes, his Fecal Matter demos, his mix tapes and oral canvases like Montage, a lot of silly spoken word stuff and not-silly spoken word stuff like the story he told of losing his virginity, covers of the Beatles songs, it just ran the gamut. And a lot of sound effects and a lot of sound design. As that would essentially serve as the basis of this movie, because I wanted to make a film in which Kurt could tell the story of his life in the best way he couldThe documentary is going to be released in January at Sundance and will include interviews with family and friends, home video of Kurt Cobain growing up, and assorted performances from Nirvana. via B+B"

This is a solid route to take on such a dynamic individual. Such a wealth of material, the likes of which fans have yet to indulge in, means that we can expect something different than what we have seen before.

If you are interested in seeing another small portrait of Kurt Cobain, he is featured in samples of live performances in the documentary 1991: The Year Punk Broke.

This documentary is more about the no-wave and noise rock musicians in the early ’90s making a fever dream of a home video. 1991 includes interactions between members of Sonic Youth and Nirvana, plus an early Nirvana performance where Cobain destroys the set in a hospital patient outfit.

This will be an interesting documentary as, despite the public light, many facets of Cobain’s life have remained a mystery.

Reception so far for the documentary has been mostly positive and fans of the Music and Culture that he perpetuated at that time look poised to be pleased.

The documentary “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck” will air on HBO May 4, 2015.
