Dallas Cowboys

What makes a good draft, or even a solid day of the draft? A big part of it is value. The Dallas Cowboys may be one team who has gotten great value with each pick they’ve made through three rounds (our next team may be as well).

Byron Jones at 27 in the first-round may prove to be a reach. But with his physical gifts it was hard to argue. It’s even harder to argue with Randy Gregory at pick No. 60. With the character concerns (a report floated Friday night that Gregory was 90 minutes late for a team visit with the New Orleans Saints), it’s easy to see why he fell to the second-round.

Though I personally had him with a second-round grade, it was an early second-round grade. The other caveat is that he was the 25th best player overall. So the Cowboys got a guy who was the 25th best player (and most people will say he was better than that) with the 60th pick. That’ll do.

Then the Cowboys turned around and did it again in the third-round, getting Florida offensive lineman Chaz Green, a guy who could have easily been a second-round pick as well. He’s not a plug-and-play guy, and doesn’t have to be since the Cowboys are already set along the offensive line.

But they may move on from current right tackle Doug Free in a year, at which point Green should be ready to man the right side of the offensive line. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
