Jamie Foxx thinks he crushed the Pacquiao-Mayweather national anthem

Jamie Foxx claims that he did an impressive rendition of the national anthem prior to the fight on Saturday night.

Oh, he killed it alright.

Jamie Foxx, who sang the national anthem prior to Saturday night’s fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, defended his performance during Tuesday’s appearance on “Ellen” with Ellen DeGeneres.

In case you missed his performance live, here is the whole thing. All two minutes of it.

Let’s remember, Foxx did win an Oscar for his performance as Ray Charles in “Ray,” so it’s not like the guy can’t sing. His voice comes across well but it is just a little too stylized. In the same vein as Christina Aguilera singing a classic holiday song. It is great on its own, no need to go over-to-top.

Clearly something went wrong here. Maybe he let the height of the moment get to him. Or maybe there’s another explanation.

“My inner ears came out and I’m singing with an organ so I can’t hear what the organ is doing with the big crowd,” Foxx told DeGeneres. “So some of it was a little off, but I think in the arena, it killed. The telecast was a little off. But ya know, we still love America.”

I guess it’s one those, “you had to be there” things.

Basically what Foxx said is that, despite all of the technical difficulties he encountered, he still did a great job.

Good for Jamie for standing behind his work. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees with him. There was some intense, instant Twitter reaction. The joke that the real fight of the night was between Foxx and the national anthem was a common theme.

Watch Jamie’s defense below and make your own opinion.

Oh, and if you were lucky enough to be at the fight on Saturday night, let us know if it really was better live.
