Willie Cauley-Stein

The Kentucky big man may have been hiding some of his potential playing with Karl-Anthony Towns all season at Kentucky. But one thing is for sure, he is no chump. And with the Philadelphia 76ers, who are in need of a guard, ahead of them at no. 3 overall, he might be available when the time comes.

Cauley-Stein’s upside comes in his ability to do just about everything. His size and jumping ability make him a solid shot blocker in the lane. His large frame and quickness make him a solid candidate for guarding someone in the low post. Additionally, he isn’t too bad of a passer and can score in an offense where the defense is focused primarily on the guards. With Melo in the game, it could prove to work out in his favor.

Obviously the downside to drafting Cauley-Stein would be his offensive streakiness. He can’t really create his own shot and won’t be able to contribute without the help of a teammate. His poor free throw shooting is also noteworthy. We have seen how much of a liability Andrew Jordan was this post season on the Clippers because he couldn’t knock down free throws. It’s one of the easiest parts of the game, and might not be something the Knicks want to mess with if they have other options.

Still, Cauley-Stein seems to be one of the front runners for potential first round picks for the New York Knicks. But no one will actually know until Adam Silver gets on the mic and announces who they have selected in the 2015 NBA Draft.
