5. Jimmy Rollins — Current Hits: 2,353

After Ichiro, Beltre, Pujols and Cabrera, there isn’t really a lock for 3,000 hits when it comes to projecting the rest of the careers for players. That doesn’t mean other veterans who are in the 2,000’s don’t have shot however.

It just means, you’re going to have be in it for the long haul and extend your career if getting 3,000 hits is important to you. That’s no easy task either as a player has to still be able to show that he can play at a consistent level as he gets older with age, and has to show a love of the game.

Jimmy Rollins is one of those guys who has a love for the game and is a great clubhouse guy. He won a World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies and is now trying to do so with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In Philadelphia, he also had several impressive years of hitting too, which has put him closing in on 2,400 hits. He should hit that number by the end of this year for Los Angeles.

However, the two biggest problems that Rollins will have to battle is age and consistency. Rollins is currently 36 years old and will be 37 when next season begins. To be 600 hits away at 37 years old, would mean that he would have to play into his 40’s to achieve the feat.

While playing into his 40’s is certainly no issue for some, and it has been done several times before, there has to be consistency in play too. Rollins, this season, is batting under .200 and has struggled at the plate for the Dodgers. If he is losing his bat, it might not be a good sign if he wants to get to 3,000 hits.

At age 37, will Rollins be willing to take on the task of getting 600 more hits? It all depends if he wants to hang around and if he can hang around.
