When news broke of Cleveland Browns offensive line coach Andy Moeller’s indefinite suspension, it seemed likely the incident had to do with alcohol. After all, Moeller had already faced a suspension with the Baltimore Ravens for a similar offense and was known to struggle with substance abuse issues.
Shockingly, the allegations against Moeller go far beyond substance abuse and driving while intoxicated, according to ESPN. The Brea Ohio police have released a recording of a 911 call in which a woman, voice shaking, said a man “just tried to strangle me and beat me up and I’m leaving the premises and I’ve got to get out of here quickly.”
The man referenced in the 911 call was allegedly Moeller. It seems the woman he allegedly attacked is also his fiancee, and that the dispute started over a phone call the woman made to her son. She also disclosed to the 911 operator that this was not the first time Moeller had been violent.
Prior to coaching with the Cleveland Browns, Moeller was with another AFC North team, the Baltimore Ravens. During his time there, he faced a $47,000 fine and a two-game suspension for a 2010 arrest for negligent driving and driving under the influence. At the time, Moeller said, “I take total responsibility for my actions and I’m committed to the programs the Ravens and others have afforded me.”
The Browns will play the Jets in their season opener on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET. With Moeller suspended, the offensive line coach will be former assistant George DeLeone.
