Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the prequel we’ve wanted

With Rogue One coming out later this year, it looks like we’ll FINALLY be getting the Star Wars prequel we always wanted.

Let’s just say that many people felt some level of disappointment with Star Wars Episodes I-III and leave it at that. Back in the 90s, Episodes IV-VI were it. Everyone’s imagination soared at the idea of seeing what happened prior to A New Hope. Then A Phantom Menace came out in 1999. It lacked the magical force of the originals. Granted, it had a lot to live up to, but with Rogue One coming out later this year, it looks like we’ll FINALLY get the prequel we always wanted.

WARNING: Potential spoilers ahead

The film takes place just before A New Hope

“A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans in ‘Star Wars’ anthology film, Rogue One,” according to the official Star Wars account Twitter account. We know precious few other things about the project. For example, we know the lead role is played by Felicity Jones. Rumors abound that she’s Boba Fett’s daughter, a rebel pilot, a soldier, etc. It sounds like she will lead a small band of rebels on this dangerous mission. It will be a A New Hope-style 70’s-esque space saga made for the modern age! From the Stormtroopers to the X-Wings, the filmmakers want this to be thrilling story, a prequel that’s true to the look and feel of the original, and…

The most infamous villain is back

Arguably the best villain of all time, Darth Vader, will be back, voiced once again by James Earl Jones. We get to see Darth Vader, in all his assisted-breathing robot glory, at the peak of his evil power, run amok over hapless rebels. It’s everything we wanted in Revenge of the Sith with none of the “Nooooo!” YESSSS!!

What other characters might we see?

Let’s not stop with Darth Vader! We could certainly see The Emperor, Boba Fett, C-3PO, R2-D2, and other A-listers. But this film is a great chance to expand on other favorite minor characters. How about witnessing Greedo in action? Maybe he IS slow on the draw? Or we could hear more static-speak from Hammerhead? (Stop. Hammerhead time.) Maybe some X-Wing training by Porkins on the actual rebel base on Yavin IV? Way to stay on target, Red Six! This is the film to do it.

Bothan spies

There hasn’t been a whisper about them appearing in Rogue One, but we know the Rebel Alliance uses a network Bothan spies. As Mon Mothma said in Return of the Jedi, “Many Bothans died to bring us this information” when planning the attack on the second Death Star. Since Rogue One is about stealing plans to the first Death Star, there must be at least some level of Bothan espionage going on.

It’s going to be dark, different

Actors and others close to the film compare it to a sci-fi version of Saving Private Ryan, others to a type of heist movie. Based on those comparisons, it’s not a surprise that they say it’s a “different” kind of Star Wars film. This is a good thing. Director Gareth Edwards has hindsight to assist him. He understands the bleak struggle of the Rebels. He’s probably seen The Empire Strikes Back, widely considered the best film of the saga. He gets to take us back to a time when the Dark Side was at the height of its power, and the Rebellion at its nadir. It was a time when the Rebels were in desperate need…of a new hope.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, opens on December 16th, 2016.
