Spider-Man might have trouble choosing sides in Civil War II
By Nick Tylwalk
Spider-Man looks like he’ll have to do some additional soul-searching in Marvel’s upcoming Civil War II.
In the first Civil War comic book series, Spider-Man had one of the most distinct beats. He initially sided with Iron Man on the pro-registration team, even unmasking to the world as Peter Parker in the ultimate sign of good faith. Eventually, though, his conscience got the best of him, and he defected to Captain America’s anti-registration faction.
Early promo art for Civil War II, on the way later this year, suggested that maybe Spider-Man won’t have as difficult a decision this time around. The twin images released last week showing both Iron Man and Captain Marvel gathering different heroes behind them made it appear that the wall-crawler would be firmly in the “Protect the Future” camp headed up by Carol Danvers.
Then again, maybe not.
Today, Marvel announced a brand new limited series called Civil War II: Amazing Spider-Man by writer Christos Gage and artist Travel Foreman. As you can see from the cover to issue #1, Spider-Man might be doing some more agonizing.
Then again, agonizing is one of the things Peter Parker does best.
Gage said in an interview with Marvel.com that “[Peter] isn’t about to pick a side until he can figure out what the Inhuman at the center of this is all about,” so he goes and hangs out with the Human Torch. Johnny Storm has been hanging with the Inhumans for a while, giving Peter an in with the mystery Inhuman.
And yes, it’s not gone unnoticed that Marvel has decided to put an Inhuman at the center of this storyline. The company has been pushing that group of evolved humans hard across all media, including making them a focus of Season 3 of Agents of SHIELD and announcing an Inhumans movie for later in the decade.
Previous descriptions of Civil War II merely mentioned a mystery person with the power to predict the future, but it’s now being made very clear said person is an Inhuman.
"There’s a new Inhuman with the ability to predict the future. The Marvel Universe stands at a crossroads. Do its heroes wield this power to change the future as they see fit, or do they reject it and allow tomorrow to unfold unaltered? Iron Man and Captain Marvel stand on opposite sides of the issue, but one thing is for certain – this new Inhuman bears an immense responsibility to use his powers safely. And if there’s one person who knows a thing or two about power and responsibility – it’s the Amazing Spider-Man."
Sound like your cup of tea? You can look for Civil War II: Amazing Spider-Man #1 wherever comics are sold this June.
