NBA Free Agency 2016: 5 worst fits for Rajon Rondo
3. San Antonio Spurs
Could you see Gregg Popovic putting up with Rondo’s drama? Often times the fiery point guard will get into disputes with referees, teammates and even coaches, and that’s not something the league’s best active coach wants to deal with nor has the patience to put up with.
Sure, you could argue that the Spurs fit the description of a team looking to add a facilitator, but Tony Parker is already leading San Antonio and he hasn’t done too shabby of a job, winning four NBA titles as the starting point guard.
Just last season, Parker averaged 11.9 points and 5.3 assists per game, but he’s capable of putting up 15 points and about five or six assists per night. He did all that with an aging roster around him and it should be cleaned up soon pending the decisions of Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili.
Parker is also getting up there in age at 34 and Rondo wouldn’t be much of an improvement nor could I see either one coming off the bench. Rondo has started every game of his career since the 2007-08 season and it would be an ugly situation if a coach were to tell him he’d be the sixth man — at least right now.
Rondo would probably have the best chance at a title with the Spurs, but let’s face it, he’s just not a good fit in San Antonio.
