5. Dansby Swanson (Braves), Shortstop – U.S. Team

Dansby Swanson was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks after spending his college career with the Vanderbilt Commodores. However, Swanson is no longer with the D’Backs organization as he was the centerpiece in the deal this past offseason that allowed Shelby Miller to come to Arizona from the Atlanta Braves. Now the 22-year-old shortstop is a bastion of hope for the Braves.

After a big season playing in Single-A last year and then succeeding at the same level to start 2016, he graduated quickly to Double-A with the Mississippi Braves. Despite his immense talent, his bat has been quieter than expected since coming to the Braves affiliate at Double-A. Swanson has played 57 games with Mississippi and has only hit for a .269 average and put up only a .764 OPS. Though he has 10 doubles, four triples, and five home runs to go with 29 RBIs with his new team, that he’s striking out essentially 20 percent of the time is less than stellar.

However, Swanson has immense talent and could simply just be slumping right now. There’s no better way to turn that around and re-inspire the Braves fans and organization than for a big showing at the All-Star Futures Game and he’s more than capable of delivering such things.
