All-Star Futures Game 2016: 5 biggest prospects
4. Alex Bregman (Astros), Shortstop – U.S. Team
Even if you loosely keep up with the MLB Draft, the name Alex Bregman is certainly familiar to you after he was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 draft by the Houston Astros. What’s been wildly impressive from the 22-year-old out of LSU, though, is how rapidly he’s been rising through the organization and how soon he might be on the Astros roster with the rate he’s going.
After starting out in Single-A last season, Bregman started this year in Double-A and has already been called up to the Fresno Grizzlies. Unsurprisingly, the stud shortstop has been playing incredibly well since being called up not long ago. In fact, Bregman has put up better numbers with Fresno than through eight games he did at Corpus Christi in Double-A. Through those eight games, Bregman’s hitting .389 with a ridiculous 1.310 OPS to go along with already hitting five home runs, three doubles, and 14 RBIs. It’s safe to say that he’s been mashing.
Given his rapid ascension through the organization, you have to wonder if Bregman has the opportunity to showcase his talent in this game on Sunday to help further his case for being a September call-up or something of the sort. If his recent play is any indication, that could surely be the case.
