All-Star Futures Game 2016: 5 biggest prospects
3. Andrew Benintendi (Red Sox), Outfield – U.S. Team
Considering the way that the Boston Red Sox can hit and change the game with their bats, it almost seems unfair to look at the prospects that they have in their minor league system. It’s truly an embarrassment of riches for the Red Sox and one of the players at the forefront of that is outfielder Andre Benintendi.
The 21-year-old Benentendi made his debut in the Red Sox minor league system last season and has already made his way up to Double-A ball with the Portland Sea Dogs this year. And he hasn’t just been filling space on the roster in Portland either—Benentendi has been looking like a potential star in the making.
Benentendi has played 47 games now with the Sea Dogs and has been playing quite well. The Cincinnati, OH native is hitting .288 over those games with a .844 OPS, six home runs, and 13 doubles to go with 28 RBIs as well. While you’d like to see those numbers climb. that this is his first taste of Double-A ball and he’s already showing promise is a great sign.
With how Boston is expected to move at the MLB Trade Deadline, watching Benentendi in the All-Star Futures Game should be something near the top of many teams’ list, especially if they have pitching that could be had by the Red Sox.
