The WWE Backlash 2016 pay-per-view has been confirmed for September, following the upcoming major SummerSlam event this summer.

WWE Backlash 2016 will take place after a seven-year hiatus and will be among the branded events following the recent draft. The pay-per-view was confirmed recently by the professional wrestling company for this coming September.

Tickets for the Backlash event were recently announced via the WWE website. The event is scheduled to take place in Richmond, Virginia at the Richmond Coliseum on Sunday, Sept. 11 with a start time of 7:30 p.m. EST. Tickets officially go on sale at Ticketmaster as of Saturday, July 30.

The early rumor is that this particular pay-per-view will be one of the “SmackDown branded” events. While details aren’t still fully available as to what that means, the speculation is that only wrestlers on the SmackDown roster would work matches for the event. As far as it goes right now, both the upcoming Battleground and SummerSlam events will feature both rosters.

The Backlash event first started in 1999 and ran all the way through 2009. Among the matches that took place at the 2009 edition were Christian winning the ECW Championship from Jack Swagger, Chris Jericho defeating Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, and Edge defeating John Cena for the World Heavyweight title. The latter of these matches was a Last Man Standing Match. The finish saw The Big Show get involved, smashing Cena into a nearby light which cost the champ the title.

As of 2010, Backlash had changed over to Extreme Rules, so it’s unknown whether WWE keeps both. Backlash is going to be part of WWE’s new experiment with the Raw and Smackdown brands hosting their own events, so it will be interesting to see how PPV viewership is with these events coming twice per month.
