Today is First Contact Day, and in celebration, Star Trek Online celebrates with a little bit of a “Magic Carpet Ride” by Steppenwolf.

If Star Trek has taught us anything, it’s that we’ll be meeting the Vulcans for the first time on this day, 46 years from today.

Unfortunately, we’ll have gone through two more World Wars before Spock and company bless us with their presence .

To help make the official First Contact Day a little bit easier — and, of course, to promote Star Trek: First Contact — Perfect World’s Star Trek Online MMO decided to celebrate the best way it knew how: by giving us all a little “Magic Carpet Ride.”

According to Destructoid, First Contact Day was celebrated by launching a new immersive event in honor of Zefram Cochrane’s launch of The Phoenix, which was the first-ever ship that went faster than the speed of light. (For what it’s worth, humanity has been able to build a super-sonic plane, but not a super-luminal one. We’ve got to pick up the pace on that a little bit…)

From the site:

"“Players get to run around a virtual version of rural Montana collecting parts [to build the ship]. The kicker comes at the end, though, as players launch their replicas and the song “Magic Carpet Ride” plays, just like it did in the movie. For their trouble, participating players also unlock a custom “rocket launch” novelty emote, and a “holo-emitter” that makes any shuttle they’re flying look like the Phoenix.”"

Next: Star Trek Discovery delayed again

Meanwhile, Star Trek: Discovery is still delayed, though the new cast that’s been announced so far has caused a lot of excitement.
