James Washington

WR, Oklahoma State

The Kansas City Chiefs knew what they wanted to do with their first round pick on Thursday, and shocked the NFL world by trading up 17 spots to draft at No. 10. With that pick, the Chiefs tabbed their future at the quarterback position, selecting Patrick Mahomes II out of Texas Tech. Mahomes should sit behind Alex Smith for a year, before taking over as the team’s starter for the 2018 NFL season.

Kansas City had only six picks in the draft, and while they did select wide receiver Jehu Chesson from Michigan in the fourth round, he is not a long-term answer as a WR1. With their first pick in 2018, the Chiefs should look to bring in a guy that Mahomes can throw to for the next ten seasons, and that player is James Washington out of Oklahoma State. Washington has gone for over 1,000 yards the last two seasons, including eclipsing the 1,300-yard barrier in 2016.

The Chiefs are building for the future, but also should be a solid team in 2017. They won the AFC West last season, and some believe they could be the team to unseat the New England Patriots in the conference this year. Regardless, Tyreek Hill is a nice piece, but with Jeremy Maclin starting to miss time due to injuries, the time has come for the team to spend a high pick on a quality wideout.
