ESPN apparently thinks Sidney Crosby plays for the Boston Bruins.

Recently, ESPN has gotten a lot of criticism for letting go of a number of reporters. Perhaps no sport they cover got hit harder than the NHL, who lost no fewer than three excellent writers and reporters.

The repercussions of having no hockey writers who aren’t behind their ESPN insider paywall is starting to show, as ESPN is convinced Sidney Crosby plays for the Boston Bruins. Because the tweet will likely get deleted once they realize their grave error, here’s a screen shot.

Take note of the vertical writing to the right side. It clearly says “Sidney Crosby – Boston Bruins”. There’s no excuse for this error. While the Bruins and Penguins have remarkably similar home jerseys (both wear black and gold), don’t you think the skating bird on the jersey would have given them the hint? A Bruin is a type of bear and one would think ESPN would be able to differentiate a bear from a penguin. But apparently not.

The Penguins are still in the playoffs while the Bruins aren’t. It’s amazing the tweet has lasted over an hour without being deleted. Pittsburgh will have to deal without their captain Crosby in Game 4 after suffering a concussion. Washington Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen, who received a five minute major and an ejection for the hit, will not be facing supplemental discipline.

This is very concerning considering Crosby’s history with concussions. He’s had no fewer than five of them during his career. One (potentially two) of them kept him off of the ice for over a year. To those who might say the league protects Crosby, keep in mind Brandon Dubinsky is the only player to get suspended for doing anything to him. And he only got one game for hitting Sid The Kid in the back of the head.
