10. Stone Cold Steve Austin turns heel, sides with Vince McMahon and wins WWF Championship; WrestleMania X-Seven, 2001

We’ve already discussed that Stone Cold Steve Austin and Vince McMahon should never be on the same side of anything because their rivalry helped build what WWE is today.

Unfortunately in 2001 at WrestleMania X-Seven, that’s exactly what happened. McMahon assisted Austin in his WWF Championship match against The Rock in the main event of the show and Austin would go on to win the title after an array of Stunners and countless chair shots.

After the match, the two men stared at each other and then shook hands in one of the most shocking displays in WWE history. Jim Ross said that Austin was shaking hands with the devil himself and it certainly felt like he truly sold his soul for the title.

Getting the title off of The Rock made sense because of his acting career really starting to gain traction, but turning Austin heel with the help of McMahon? That’s just bad. It’s bad because these two should be nowhere near the same side.

They tried to have it make sense with Triple H joining Austin in an onslaught of The Rock in a rematch, but there was probably one other man Austin despised more (in storyline) than The Rock (and McMahon) and that was The Game.

There’s more coming from this year, so this one gets swept under the rug a bit, especially with Rock heading for Hollywood and Triple H tearing his quadriceps later on.
