With Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum already on the roster, the Portland Trail Blazers don’t necessarily need another point guard, but using their third first round pick to find another rotation guard doesn’t seem like a bad idea. There are plenty of experienced options late in the first round who could fit the role, but the flavor of the day is Colorado’s Derrick White, a 6-foot-5 prospect who played three years of Division II basketball before delivering a masterful season for the Buffaloes in 2016-17. White’s size should allow him to play either guard spot and form a three guard rotation with the duo.
White averaged 22.0 points, 5.3 assists and 5.0 rebounds per 40 minutes while shooting 39.6 percent from behind the 3-point arc. He was elite from an efficiency point of view as a high usage (25.3 percent) scorer with a 62.7 true shooting percentage. White showed that he is a comfortable shooter both off the catch and off the dribble while also being highly efficiency around the basket. The senior guard was also excellent in pick-and-roll, but with a mediocre team around him, he didn’t produce the elite passing numbers that seemingly were possible.
With a 6-foot-8 wingspan, White should also be a decent defender at the point of attack. He snagged an impressive 1.8 blocks and 1.5 steals per 40 minutes this season as well.
