Lena Headey and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau spoke to time about the incestuous relationship of the characters they play on Game of Thrones.
Game of Thrones fans have become accustomed to seeing the inappropriate love scenes between Cersei Lannister and her brother, Jaime Lannister. In fact, many viewers barely bat an eye when the on-screen brother and sister engage in their incestuous relationship, and the actors who play the roles feel the same.
According to Time Magazine, Lena Headey claims that Cersei’s love for Jamie stems from wanting to be her brother. The actress says that her character has always been envious of her brother because he was born with privilege as a male heir to the Lannister family.
“Cersei’s always wanted to be him. Therefore, for her, that relationship is completion. There’s been an envy because he was born with privilege just for being a man. I think their love was built on respect.”
As for Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, he looks at the relationship between Jaime and Cersei a bit differently. The actor claims that he doesn’t think of Cersei as Jaime’s sister, but only as the woman that he is in love with. One of the reasons Nikolaj can’t wrap his head around the brother and sister’s incest is due to the fact that he has two sisters himself, and he claims that the situation is just “too weird” to think about as he’s acting his Game of Thrones role.
“I’ve never really gone too deep into the whole sister-brother thing because I can’t use that information. I have to look at her as the woman he loves and desires. Lena’s a very good actress, and that’s kind of what carries the whole thing. I have two older sisters. I do not want to go there. It’s just too weird.”
Game of Thrones will return for Season 7 on July 16. The new season is expected to be the best and most dramatic yet for the HBO series.
