The Chicago Cubs got bad news in regards to Wilson Contreras who is expected to be placed on the DL.

Chicago Cubs catcher Wilson Contreras is reportedly expected back by September after suffering a hamstring injury on Wednesday in San Francisco. Contreras injured the hamstring running out a ground ball and had to be helped off the field.

While not officially on the DL, Contreras is expected to be placed on the DL in the next day or so. The Cubs have an insurance policy in Alex Avila who was acquired in the Justin Wilson trade at the deadline.

This is really a big blow for the Cubs who are in the midst of a divisional race with the Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates. As of Friday the Cubs only lead the Cardinals by a game with the Brewers and Pirates two and three games back respectively.

Contreras’s 70 RBI this season currently lead all catchers, and since the All-Star break he’s been on fire. Contreras hit .311 with 10 home runs and 29 RBI’s to go along with his 1.080 OPS in 23 games.

As a team after winning 13 of their first 16 games out of the break the Cubs have now hit a wall. They’ve lost six of their last nine games, and now have a weekend series with the Arizona Diamondbacks who are one of the best home teams in all of baseball.

The loss of Contreras for this amount of time isn’t the most ideal situation, but luckily it seems like he should be back before the end of the season. In the meantime, the Cubs will look for guys like Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber to get back on track and help win the division.
