Giancarlo Stanton blasts home run No. 47 on the year (Video)

Giancarlo Stanton continued his hot streak Thursday with his 47th home run of the season.

Giancarlo Stanton broke a 1-1 tie against the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday with a home run to straightaway center field in the third inning. The home run came off 23-year-old rookie Jake Thompson in his third career start.

Stanton hit it past the short center field wall at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. While it was well past 400 feet, it isn’t that far compared to some of Stanton’s biggest home runs of the season.

According to Statcast, the ball left the field with a velocity of 115.7 miles per hour. That is the fastest home run that Stanton has hit this season. The home run gave Stanton his 100th RBI, which is just five shy of his career high.

Ever since the All-Star break, Giancarlo Stanton has been on a tear. He has been breaking franchise records for the Miami Marlins left and right. He has the record for most home runs hit in a single month and single season already.

Stanton is well on his way to putting up one of the best slugging seasons in Major League Baseball history.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly told Bleacher Report, “If he falls asleep the rest of the year, he’s going to hit 50.”

When asked if Stanton could hit the recently elusive 60, he responded, “Why not?”

Only seven players have hit 50 home runs in a season since 2004, the year baseball began testing and penalizing players for drugs. Not a single player has hit 60 in one season.

Stanton has been one of the few bright spots on a team that has struggled all season. While they currently sit in second place in the National League East, they are 13.5 games behind the Washington Nationals. Meanwhile, the Phillies are an abysmal 46-79, as of Thursday, putting them 29.5 games behind first place.
